Notes | Some have suggested that she was Catherine Cotton, a daughter of William Cotton & his wife (-----) Petyon, William being a son of Rev. William Cotton and his wife Ann Graves of Northampton Co, VA. However Rev. Wm. Cotton's will of 20 Aug 1640 did not mention a son William and Dorman, Vol 2, p. 133/135, does not show a son William. Evidently Rev. Wm. Cotton left only a daughter Verlinda Cotton who married 1st Thomas Burdett and 2nd Richard Boughton. Bob Burton of Perry, GA provided the following: There is Bible record at the Delaware Archives which states that Robert Burton the first...William Burton, son of Robert, born Nov 19, 1677. Robert Burton 1st was married to Catherine Cotton Feb 11, 1676. William Burton and Frances was married Dec 29, 1700. (NOTE: If she was a Cotton from Accomack County, perhaps she was related to some of the following Cottens/Cottons named in Accomack County records between 1665 and 1692: 1) James Cotten who was on a 1665 land certificate for John Williams and on a 1666 land certificate for Robert Johnson, 2) Thomas Cotten who was on a 1665/6 land certificate for David Williamson and on 1672/3 land certificate for Christopher Thompson, 3) William Cotten who was on a 1666 land certificate for Henry White, or 4) John Cotton, a servant boy judged to be age 14 in Mar 1678/9 and was given his freedom in Feb 1691/2.) |
