- Capt. Josiah Johnson, 87 years old, a retired Sandy Hook pilot, and a resident of Brooklyn for many years, at 358 Hawthorne St., Flatbush, died Thursday, of the ailments of old age, at the summer residence of his son, Capt. Henry Clay Johnson, in North Stamford, Conn. His funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the chapel at 15 Greene Ave, Brooklyn, and interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Capt. Johnson was born in Eastville, Accomac(sic) Co, Virginia, the son of the late Obadiah and Leah Johnson. He started to follow the sea on a pilot boat when 12 years old, and was given his license as a pilot when 19 years old. He was 11 years old when he came to Brooklyn to live with his uncle, Josiah Johnson, a Sandy Hook pilot, and young Josiah followed his uncle in seafaring life within a year. Capt. Johnson was in command of several pilot boats during his long service in local waters, the least being the Edmund Blunt. He retired from service about 15 years ago. Capt. Johnson's father lost a leg by a cannon shot while serving on the old frigate Constitution in the War of 1812. Capt. Johnson was a United States pilot in the Civil War, carrying troops, among them the 13th Regt. of Brooklyn, to Annapolis, Md., on the steamship Marion. Capt. Johnson is survived by a son Capt. Henry Clay Johnson; a step-son, Capt. Josiah Johnson Russell; nine grandchildren and nine great-grand children.
