  	Anthony (Antonio), an Afrian, left England in July 1621 and came to Virginia on the James. On 16 Feb 1624 he was living at Warrresqueak.

  	He was shown as Antonio a Negro, who came on the James in 1621, in the muster of Mr. Edward Bennett's servants. Also listed was Mary a Negro woman who came in the Margrett & John in 1622.

  	He was shown as Anthony a Negro on a patent for 1250 acres and 1050 acres issued to William Gany on the northward side of the mouth of Hungars Creek, adjacent to land of William Andrews. It was renewed by Sir John Harvey in the name of Thomas Burbage.

  	Edwyn Conaway Clarke saith that being at the house of Capt. Taylor about 10 July last the said Capt. Taylor in the morning went into the quartering house and this deponent comeing forth of the dwelling house did see Capt. Taylor and Anthony the Negro going into the corn field and when they returned from the said corn field the said Negro told this deponent saying now Mr. Taylor and I have devided our corn and I am very glad of it now I know mine own, he finds fault with me that I do not work but now I know my own ground I will work when I please and play when I please. And the said Capt. Taylor asked the said Negro saying are you content with what you have and the Negro answered saying I am very well content with what I have or words to that effect.

  	It contained 250 acres at great Naswattock Creek., being a neck of land bounded on the S.W. by the main Creek & on the S.E. & N.W. by two small branches issueing out of the main Creek. It was granted for the transporation of 5 persons: Tho. Bemrose, Peter Bughby, Antho. Cripps, Jno. Gesorroro(?) & Richard Johnson. NOTE: Whitelaw shows this patent is near Pungoteague.

  	I, Anthony Johnson Negro do hereby acquitt & discharge John Casar Negro from all service claims & demands whatsoever from the beginning of the world to this day; and do promise (according to the custom of services) to pay Jno. Casar corn & cloathes. Signed 23 Nov 1654 by Anth: (his mark) Johnson. Witt: Sam'll Gouldsmyth, Robert Parker and Geor: Parker. (NOTE: The dates of this sequence of events regarding Anthony Johnson's servant John Casar seem out of order, as the final statement freeing Casar is recorded in a later record book, but has an earlier date then the charges that were brought against him.)

  	Whereas complaint was this day made to the Court by the humble peticon of Anthony Johnson Negro, against Mr. Robert Parker, that the detained one John Casor, a Negro, the plantiff's servant under pretense that the said Jno Casor is a freeman. The Court seriously considering and maturely weighing the premises do find that the said Mr. Robert Parker most unjustly kept the said Negro John Casor from his said master Anthony Johnson; As appeared by the deposition of Captain Samuel Goldsmyth and many probable circumstances; it is therefore the judgment of the Court and ordered that the said John Casor, Negro, shall forthwith be returned into the service of his said master Anthony Johnson and that the said Mr. Robert Parker make payment of all charges in the suite alias execucon.

  	The deposition of Captain Samuell Goldsmyth taken 8 Mar 1654/55 sayth that being at the house of Anthony Johnson, Negro, about the beginning of November last, to receive a hogshead of tobacco, a Negro called John Casar came to this deponent and told him that he came to Virginia for 7 or 8 years as an indentured servant, and that he had demanded his freedom of Anthony Johnson his master and further said that he had kept him his servant 7 years longer then he should or ought, and desired that his deponent would see that he might have no wrong; whereupon your deponent demanded of Anthony Johnson his indenture the said Johnson answered he never saw any. The Negro replied when he came in he had an indenture, Anthony Johnson said he had the said Negro for life. But Mr. Robert and George Parker said they know that the said Negro had an indenture in one Mr. Carey's hand on the other side of the Bay; further the said Mr. Robert Parker and his brother George said (if the said Anthony Johnson did not let the Negro go free) that said Negro John Casar would recover most of his corn from him the said Johnson. Then Anthony Johnson (as this deponent did suppose) was in fear (upon the discourse) Anthony Johnson's son-in-law, his wife and his own two sons persuaded the Negro Anthony Johnson to set the said John Casar free.

  	And: (Anthony) Johnson and John Johnson, Negroes, sell 2 heifers, one 3 years old and the other 2 years old (described in detail) to John Williams with all the increased. Signed by the mark of And: Johnson & John Johnson. Witt: John Rogers & John Assford. Recorded 25 January 1658/59. (NOTE: The date of the signature by And: & John Johnson, shown as 21 Dec 1659, was probably 21 Dec 1658.)

  	It was in this year that Anthony Johnson gave 50 acres of this tract to his son Richard, and Anthony and Mary Johnson sold the remaining 200 acres to Morris Matthews and John Rowles. Although the deed is not of record, the son Richard Johnson must have sold his 50 acres to Major George Parker, because in 1671 the latter received a patent for it.

  	Morris Mathews, planter of Great Choptanck, Dorchester County, Maryland, appointed Devorax Browne of Accomack County, merchant, to be his attorney and sell to Capt. Parker 100 acres in Nandue, formerly owned by Anthony Johnson, Negro. Witnesses: Henry Trippe, Randall Revell. Signed 14 July 1670, by Morris (MM) Mathewes. Morris Mathews acknowledged payment for the above land, 13 November 1666. Witnesses: John Parker, William White. Deposition of Elizabeth Leveret aged about 40 years: In 1666, Capt. George Parker, Morris Matthews and John Roulls came to the house of William Chase and Rich. Cock. In the presence of Roulls and Chase, Mathews delivered to Parker the land and house. Chase desired Parker to remove from his part Richard Cocks and his wife; he would then become Parker's servant. Signed 16 May 1671, Elisabeth Leverett. Recorded 2 August 1671, by John Culpeper, Clerk.
