  	In 1614 as a result of Argoll's report, Sir Thomas Dale, Acting Governor, sent over to the Eastern Shore, Lt. Craddock in charge of a detachment of men to catch fish and to produce salt on Smith Island (tract N1). This little outpost became known as Dale's Gift (tract N3), and was one of the 6 settlements in Virginia in 1616, but by 3 years later it had ceased to function, as the salt works were then reported to be "wholly gong to rack and lett fall," in spite of the fact that Jamestown "inhabitants are exceedingly distempered by eating pork and other meats fresh and unseasoned."
  Anecdote	1625  [1]
  	On 10 Jan 1627 John Craddock, a mariner, testified that 2 years earlier, Luke Boyse of Bermuda Hundred had sent him to Accomack to retrieve a shipment of tobacco from Capt. William Epes's plantation. He did so, but on the return trip the tobacco got wet. On 19 Feb 1627 John Craddock made another appearance before the General Court. This time he testified that when he was at Martin Brandon's he had seen Lucke Boyse's widow Alice, in bed with Capt. William Epes, behaving inappropriately. In May 1627, John Craddock was lost at sea near Newport News, when he bark he was aboard sank in the James River. His death was reported to the General Court on 27 Aug 1627. As he died intestate, provost marshall Randall Smallwood was named his administrator. The General Court's justices noted that when John Craddock died, he had many debtors.
