  	Philip Taylor settled on the Eastern Shore prior to April 1634, when a bargain he had made with Capt. Edmund Scarburgh was discussed by Accomack County's court justices. Later in the year he went to court to protest the behavior of a local man, who had had sex with his maidservant. Taylor patented 500 acres on the seaside in 1643. When he testified in May 1635 about a large quantity of beaver pelts that Capt. William Claiborne had brought from Kent Isle he gave his age as 24. Two years later Taylor again was summoned to court because he had shipped some rotten tobacco to John Neale's store at Kecoughtan. In February 1638 Taylor was away from Virginia when a man tried to collect on a debt. Later that year the county justices learned that he and Mr. Neale had made a bargain involving the purchase of 21-22 hogsheads of salt. When Philip Taylor testified at Kecoughtan in 1640, he discussed the sacrifices that William Claiborne had made when establishing a trading post at Kent Island. He also identified himself as one of the original free men at Kent Island. In 1641 Accomack justices ordered Taylor not to disturb the Indians living on Mattawomes (Mattawoman) Creek, directly from his plantation. In 1642 Taylor was designed a churchwarden and took the oath of office; he also became a justice and sheriff of Northampton County, newly named in 1643. While sheriff, he was obliged to detain prisoners in his home because there was no jail. He served as a burgess for Northampton County in 1643 and died intestate sometime prior to 25 Feb 1645. His widow, Jane, who served as his administratrix, later married William Eltonhead of Maryland. Philip Taylor's heirs included two children, Zarah and Thomas. Court testimony taken in September 1645 reveals that in July 1645 one of Taylor's African servants was Anthony (Antonio) or Anthony Johnson, who came to Virginia in 1621 as one of the Bennett family's servants and eventually moved to the Eastern Shore, where he became a free man and landowner.

  	Upon the complaint of Phillip Taylor against John Little for abusing his house in going to bed to the maid of said Taylor and the next day Little being at work in the ground with a company of men boasted that the cooke was up, and the steale down and reddy to give fyre, but as the Little confessed he was disturbed. It is therefore ordered that John Little shall for the offence lay neck and heels close for 3 hours and for as much as Little confessed himself to be drunk at that time, it is ordered that he shall pay 5 shillings unto Walter Scott provost marshall. It is ordered that Ellen Muce for accusing John Little to have to do with her in the act of fornication and not approving the same, shall be whipped.

  	In 1635 Phillip Taylor had been the active assistant to William Claiborne in the settlement and later affairs of Kent Island, which is evident by this letter from Claiborne to Taylor: I understand that the Marylanders have taken my Pinnace the Longtayle with her Company and some other of my men, trading in other places. Now where as his Majesties Commission to myself warrantees me in the trade with the natives, and for as much also his Majesties gracious letters in America do declare his express pleasure to be against this their violent and exorbitant proceedings, and contrary to justice and the true intent of his Majesties Grant to the Lord Baltimore. These are to desire you that would with the first opportunity with such Company as are appointed for you set sail to Patawomack and Patuxant Rivers, or elsewhere, and to demand of them my said Pinnace and men, and if you can obtain them to take possession of them for my use and bring them again unto this place. Or missing of them make stay of such boats of theirs as you can light on. Wherein I beseech you proceed without violence unless it be in lawful necessary defense of yourself especially to avoid any bloodshed or making any assault upon and of them, and to this end I require all your Company to be obedient and assistant unto you as if I were there myself. Given at the Ile of Kent under my hand & seal this 11 May 1635.

  	Mr. Phillip Taylor petitioned the court that Mrs. Anne Dunn's goods be appraised, and (Capt.) William Roper, Mr. Stephen Charleton, James Perryn, and Daniell Baker were appointed. Her last will (recorded in James City County?) is referred to. Mrs. Seaverne (wife of John) was one of the legatees, receiving a satin petticoat and a silver-laced wastcoat.

  	It contained 1,000 acres which was approximatly the land between the seaside road and the seaboard. In 1643 Thomas Taylor, son and heir of Phillip, and his wife Frances, of Patuxant, MD, sold the 1,000 acres to William Anderson. Although the date of Phillip Taylor's death was not determined, it is evident that he must have died before the date of this transaction, yet it was not until early in 1646 that his widow Jane, or Joane, was granted local papers of administration on the estate of her late husband. The widow later married William Eltonhead of Maryland.

  	Edwyn Conaway Clarke saith that being at the house of Capt. Taylor about 10 July last the said Capt. Taylor in the morning went into the quartering house and this deponent comeing forth of the dwelling house did see Capt. Taylor and Anthony the Negro going into the corn field and when they returned from the said corn field the said Negro told this deponent saying now Mr. Taylor and I have devided our corn and I am very glad of it now I know mine own, he finds fault with me that I do not work but now I know my own ground I will work when I please and play when I please. And the said Capt. Taylor asked the said Negro saying are you content with what you have and the Negro answered saying I am very well content with what I have or words to that effect.

  	It was on this date that administration on the estate of Capt. Phillip Taylor was granted to Jane Taylor, widow of the dec'd. (NOTES: Zarah and Thomas Taylor are orphans of the dec'd, and Zarah is the godchild of Robert Moryson. The inventory of his estate was filed. There is a reference to Mrs. Jane Eltonhead, former wife of the dec'd. William Eltonhead of Maryland married Mrs. Jane Taylor the relict of Capt. Phillipp Taylor. Phillipp Taylor is orphan of Capt. Phillip Taylor dec'd.)

  	Whereas Wm. Taylor has petitioned this court that he has taken into his care Phillipp Taylor, orphan, who hath been provided for by him about two years since the decease of his father Capt. Phill: Taylor and has to the best of his ability seen him educated. Wm. Taylor as likewise petitioned to have the land of the said orphan in his possission to improve until said Phillip Taylor becomes of age. Whereas it appears to the Court that there is 1,000 acres belonging to the said orphan Phillip Taylor, situated at the seaboard side in N'hamp County, it is tought fit and ordered that said Wm. Taylor be hereby authorized to let out & dispose of the said land for the best use of the orpahn until he becomes of age, provided that he does not mollest the Indians.

Whittington this day elected guardian of the said Phillip Taylor orphan, shall forthwith make payment unto the said Wm. Taylor, the inst. sum and quantity of 2,000 lbs tobacco which the said orphan's accunt is to be responsible for, where upon the said Wm. Taylor is to give a full discharge for all claims which he may have unto the orphan Phill. Taylor.
