- Will dated 16 Jun 1791, probate 23 Aug 1791: I Matthew Purnell of Worcester County and Province of Maryland being in sound mind . . . ITEM - I give and bequeath to my son Levi Purnell all the tract of land that I now live on called Purnells Industry, but if he should die without an heir lawfully begotten of his body, then to my son Moses Purnell and I likewise give to my son Levi Purnell my Negro boy called Abel. Likewise to m son Moses Purnell 100 acres of land being a part of tract of land called Addition to Thurbin, except my sister Sarah Marshall Townsend should die before my mother and if she should then I give my mother that 100 acres of land called Addition to Thurbin during her natural live and for her to take my son Moses Purnell to live with her and at her death to my son Moses Purnell, but if my son Moses Purnell should die without an heir lawfully begotten of his body then to fall to my son Levi Purnell. ITEM - I give to my daughter Charlotty my Negro boy called Ben and one bed and furniture and two cows and calves and ten head of sheep, but if she should died without an heir lawfully begotten of her body, then to fall to my daughter Elizabeth Marshall Purnell. I likewise give to my daughter Elizabeth Marshall Purnell my Negro girl called Hetti, she and her increase and one bed and furniture and two cows and calves to her during her natural life, but if she should die without an heir lawfully begotten of her body, then to fall to my daughter Charlotty Purnell. I like wise leave my son Levi Purnell at age at 18 years of age and to receive his property that I have given him. I likewise leave to my well beloved wife Mary Purnell all the remaining part of my estate after paying all the lawful debts that shall come against me. ITEM - I give to my uncle Elisha Purnell my best hat and letute coat. Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my well beloved wife Mary Purnell and her brother James Houstan to be sole executors of this my last will and testament. On the same date Elisha Purnell, Moses Chaille & William Davis the witnesses made oath that they heard him publish, pronounce and declare the same to be his last will and testament.
