- In the name of God Amen, I George Matthews of Accomack County & being in perfect sense and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following: first I recommend by soul to God and my body to be decently buried at the discretion of my Extrs hereafter named. Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Ephraim Matthews all that tract or parcel of land I purchased of William Blake, excepting 82 acres on the east side of the tract that is now held by Sarah Blake as her right of Dower in the said tract of land, which 82 acres of land I give and bequeath to said William Blake and his heirs, on condition that he pays or causes to be paid unto my said son Ephraim the some of ten pounds three shillings and seven pence current money and if said Blake doth not pay or cause to be paid the said sum of money, to my said son then I give the whole of the above mentioned land to my said son and his heirs. I also give my said son 10 acres of land on the East side of the tract of land that belongs to me in Pocomoke Swamp, but if my son Ephraim or his heirs shall ever mislist or disturb my son George Mathews or his heirs in the quiet possession of what land I shall hereafter give him. It is my will that my son Ephraim shall not be entitled to any part or parcel of the above devise. But that it shall go and descend to my son George Matthews and his heirs. I also give my son Ephraim Matthews a small black mare that is called his. I give and bequeath to my son George Matthews all the remaining part of the tract or parcel of land that belongs to me in Pocomoke Swamp it being 170 acres to him and his heirs. I also give to my said son, all my right and title to what land I hold on Sexes Island to him and his heirs, only for him to suffer my son Ephraim to pasture his own creatures on there. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Hannah Blake my mare that is called Phillis and my negro woman named Agges and eighth part of my moveable estate and no more. It is also my will and desire that my negro man Jesse shall be sold to best advantage in order to raise money to discharge my just debts and after my just debts are paid, I give and bequeath all the remaining part of my whole estate, that is not already given to be equally divided between my wife Arcady and 4 children, Ephraim, George, Margaret and Comfort. I nominate and appoint my brother Joseph Mathews and friends John Watts Extrs of this my last will and testament and do publish and declare this to be my last will & testament hereby revoking and disannulling all wills formerly by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed by seal this 16 May 1770. Signed: George Matthews. Wittnessed Washburn Tunnel, Scarburgh Tunnel, Nehemiah Wheaton. At a court held for Accomack County, 25 Aug 1772 the within last will and testament of George Matthews was proved by the oaths of Scarburgh Tunnel and Nehemiah Whealton, two of the witnesses thereto and admitted to record. Ephraim Mathews heir at law to the testator being present by Geo. Holden his guardian and having nothing to object and on the motion of John Watts one of the Extrs therein named Joseph Mathews the other Extr refusing the Executorship, taking the oath and giving James Henry and Joseph Mathews for security who entered into and acknowledged a bond for that purpose certificate is granted him for obtaining probate there of in due form.
