  	According to a deposition he made in Nov 1677, age 53, Captain John Savage was born in 1624 (Colonial Residents of Virginia's Eastern Shore, p. 91). According to Whitelaw, p. 217, he was born in 1624. In 1637 a land patent, previously granted to his mother Hannah Savage in 1635, was reissued to John Savage. (NOTE: However, since he was not listed with his parents in the Feb 1624/25 Muster, he must have been born shortly after that in 1625.)

  	It was on this date that the orphan of Daniel Cugley was named in the inventory of his estate and later Lt. John Savage petitioned the court for the guardianship of his sister Margery Cugley.

  	The deposition of ffrancis Pettett taken in open Court - This deponent saith that about ffebruary last past Thomas Savage desired this deponent to goe along wth him unto John Savage and when they came unto the sd John Savage Asked the sd John Savage saying how is it Cozen And John Savage replyed saying I am much dampnifyed for want of my house and my hogd of tobacco. The sd John(sic) (Thos) Savage replyed saying I think I did you a courtesie in not comeing, for I should have but eaten upp yor Victualls the weather being soe vehement cold but I heare you will have mee to keepe upp my hogs in a penn all the yeare And the sd John Savage answeared you shall keepe upp yor hoggs as the rest of yor neighbors doth if they doth you shall or words to that effect, but further the sd Thomas Savage told him saying I will come and doe your work by the first of March you getting timber in readynes and I will pay you yor hogd of tobacco, And this deponent further saith that about March last past Tho: Savage being at work about the house of John Savage came to this deponent and entreated him to write the agreement betweene him and John Savage, And this deponent went and could not write it by reason his hand did shake soe John Savage did write it himselfe And further saith not.   	In his will Edward Ginkins directed all his debts in Northampton County to be satisfied, viz., to Mr. William Burwell 100#t, to Mr. Stringer 100#t, to William Stanley 10#t, to William Munns for 3 months work, to Jeffrey Minshall 40#t, and to John Peniwell one heyfer. Debts due to me from Thomas Savidge, from Thomas Dymor, from my brother Pettit two barrels of corne one of which I give to my brother Pettit and the other to John Savidge, from William Stephens as much kersey as will make a pair of mittens to be made for me by the said Jeffery. There is one heyfer of mine in John Little's field, and another in Savidge his neck. To Edward Daniel one pair of shoes and stockings. Remaining estate to William Burwell, Gent. Witt: John Prittyman, James Redwood.

  	To my son John Savage (not of age) the following eight plantations: John Webster's, Thomas Bankes', Robert Harrison's, Steven Scott's, Hendrick Abell's, Thomas Duparks', William Lawrence's, and the widow Webleye's, the said plantations containing in the whole about 700 A. And also 500 A. being part of 1000 A. which (Col.) Stringer now leases from me. To my son John one gun called "Chapman", a chest which I carried to England, my gold seal ring, and my silver wine cup. To my son Thomas Savage the plantations which (Lt.) Thomas Wilson, Samuel Powell, and John Beuzy now live upon containing 400 A. To son Thomas my gold stone ring, a silver drackine cup with the picture of a swanne in the middle. To my son Elkington Savage the three plantations belonging to Edward Cable, John Davis, and Samuel Church containing 350 A., and also 400 A. by a branch called Roody Branch and running north along the horse path until it comes to my north line. To son Elkington my silver seale and plaine silver drachin cup. To my dau. Mary Savage the plantations whereon Phillip Mongom, Edward Perkinson, and Peter Duparks live containing 300 A. To my dau. Susannah Kendall and her husband John Kendall all my right to 800 A. bounded easterly upon the main ocean, westerly upon the 400 A. given my son Elkington, and by the 200 A. given to my two grandsons Thomas and John Kendall, and northerly by the land of Richard Patrick. To my dau. Susannah one gold hoop ring. To my dau. Grace Corbin and her husband George Corbin the plantations of Samuel Yonge's, John Abbott's, and Thomas Churche's containing 250 A. To George Corbin a pair of pistolls and holsters, a pair of silver buttons, and my servant Thomas Owen alias? Wibber for the time he has to serve (being one cropp). To my grandchildren John and Thomas Kendall the sons of the above mentioned John and Susannah Kendall 200 A. lying westerly along the 400 A. given to my son Elkington. To my granddau. Susannah Kendall, the dau. of John and Susannah, the 100 A. plantation whereon William Cowdrey, my son-in-law now dwells, which I have given him for life. To my good friend and relation John Davis 1000#t. To each of Jacob Bishop, John Harmanson, Hannah Web, Anne Hudson, and Mary Baker a heifer. To my youngest dau. (no name) now lately born 500 A. being part of the 1000 A. leased to (Col.) Stringer. My children John, Elkington, and Mary Savage to be forthwith put to school for 5 years. My son John extr. My friends (Lt. Col.) William Waters, (Col.) William Kendall, John Michael, Sr., Thomas Harmanson, and my two sons-in-law John Kendall and George Corbin to oversee. To my wife Mary Savage 20s or 200#t. My three servants Thomas Tompson, William Morgan, and Jarvis Coomes each to have a cow calf.   	In the suit of Robert Fletcher vs. William Scott (Ejectment Proceedings), a jury was impaneled and returned the following verdict: We find the last will and testament of John Savage, late of Northampton County, Gentleman, dated 26 August 1678, hereto annexed ---- we also find that the devisee, John Savage, died on or about the year ____(1720) and left an only son also named John, who died on or about the ___ day of ___ 174_, and left to an only son named John who is now living. We find that the last mentioned John Savage, the great grandson, is an infant under the age of 21 years, and that before the above supposed trespass was supposed to be committed he chose the Defendant (William Scott) in the Court of the aforesaid County as his guardian, who so continues to be. We find that the John Savage, the grandson, by his indenture bearing the date 25 December 1745, in consideration of £30 current money demised the premises on which the supposed trespass was committed, from 25 December, to the plaintiff (Robert Fletcher) for the term of 10 years then next following, under the yearly rent of on shilling & quit rents as by the said indenture hereto annexed (not filed among the papers); we find that the land so demised to the plaintiff (Robert Fletcher) is part of the land devised by John Savage the elder, to his daughter Grace Corbin and her husband George, and that after her said husband George's death she intermarried with one ___ Bloxom, and left issue Savage Bloxom, who after her death entered into the premises and died without issue, and after the death of the said Savage Bloxom the said John Savage the grandson entered the premises. (NOTE: The jury evidently confused the descendants of Grace Corbin and her husband George. The fact is that George Corbin outlived Grace and married secondly a Susanna ___ by who he had two sons Dr. Ralph Corbin and Robert Corbin. He and Grace had a daughter Ann Corbin, who married John Bloxom and had the son Savage Bloxom (1714-1737) mentioned above.)

  	Since it was recently discovered that Ensign Thomas (1) Savage's son Capt. John (2) Savage married first Ann Harmanson (see note below) and not Ann Elkington as once presumed, and since Capt. John named a son Elkington by his second wife Mary Robins, therefore his son Elkington was obviously not named after his first wife Ann Harmanson, but more likely after Capt. John's mother who was evidently an Elkington. (NOTE: In the sale of 400 acres of land to John Stringer, the wife of Captain John Savage was shown as Ann and her note reads "Brother Harmanson I do request you do me the favor to acknowledge these writings John Stringer shall deliver to you on my behalf in open Court and what you do I shall ratify as abovesaid resting your loving sister to ponier Ann Savage."
