In the name of God Amen, I George Powell of Northampton County being in good health thanks be to God for it but calling to mind the certainty of death and that all flesh must die, I do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form as follows, viz, first, I give my soul unto Almighty God & my Saviour Jesus Christ and my body to the Earth to be decently buried by my executors hereafter to be named.
Item. I give unto my son Nathaniel Powell the plantation whereon I now live containing one hundred acres of land, more or less & likewise the plantation up in the woods that I bought of George Harmanson containing seventy five acres, more or less, to him my said son and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever and for the want of such heirs to my son James Powell and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever, I give unto my son George Powell the plantation I bought of Thomas Dolby containing one hundred and fifty five acres to him and his heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever and for want of such heirs I give the said one hundred and fifty five acres to my son James Powell & the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever. In case either of my aforesaid sons Nathaniel or George Powell should dock the entail in order to sell the said land given them that moment, I give the said land or lands to my son James Powell and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever and for want of an heir of my body I give the aforesaid lands to the Crown of England. I give unto my son Nathaniel Powell my Negro man Daniell & my hand mill that is in my house and one young mare called Lightfoot & my double lock chest and twelve pounds in cash to him and his heirs forever. I give unto my son George Powell my Negro man Sampson and my hand mill at my lower plantation and one sorrel mare called Liffy and two cows to remain on the plantation I gave to him, to him and his heirs forever. I give unto my son James Powell my Negro boy Liverpool and my Negro girl Dido and eighty pounds cash to him and his heirs forever. I give unto my daughter Sarah Powell my Negro man Jacob and my Negro wench Bridget, and my Negro girl Grace and my black mare called Polly to her & her heirs forever. I give unto my aforesaid daughter Sarah Powell the use of my plantations that I gave to my son Nathaniel Powell till my son Nathaniel comes to lawful age and she to pay to my aforesaid son the sum of ten pounds cash per year for his support & schooling and my brandy still to be and remain on the plantation for the use of plantation but my daughter not to sell nor cut any timber of my said lands, only logs & firewood for the said plantation’s use and the firewood to be got of the tops of the log trees. My will and desire is for my daughter Sarah Powell should take care of my daughter Hannah Bell Powell till she comes to the age of fourteen years & give her four years schooling for the profits of her estate I give unto my daughter Hannah Bell Powell my Negro boy Luke and my Negro girl Betty and one double loon in gold to make her rings if she sees fit to her and her heirs forever. I give my son Nathaniel Powell to my friend John Harmanson until my aforesaid son come to lawful age of twenty one years & he to see that my son has sufficient schooling and to let my son go to sea at some convenient times. I give my son George Powell unto my friend Michael Christian until my aforesaid son come to the age of twenty one years of age, the said Christian to account for the profits of his estate yearly and my will is that none of my land I gave my son George be cleared nor any waste made of any timber from the aforesaid lands only for the plantations use & the firewood to be got out of the tops of the log trees. I give to Elizabeth Dodd her choice of any two cattle on my plantation or six pounds cash her choice. I give all the remainder part of my estate not given away to be equally divided betwixt my three children Sarah, James & Hannah Bell Powell. Lastly, I appoint my daughter Sarah Powell executrix & my friends John Harmanson and Michael Christian executors of this my last will. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 13th day of January 1764.
