Marriage |
Abt. 1651 |
Assumed at New England, USA [3, 4] |
- Editor's Note:
The marriage date is based upon the estimated birth year of Dorothy Griffith, the inferred first child of Jerom Griffith Sr and his first wife. Dorothy’s estimated birth year is based on the following factors:
1). Her only child, Thomas Hayes, was born about 1671 according to a deposition he gave at Northampton County Court.
2). This indicates an estimated marriage date for Dorothy to Robert Hayes by 1670.
3). Assuming Dorothy was 18 when she married Hayes, her estimated birth year would be 1652. and
4). Dorothy’s birth year would suggest an approximate marriage year of Jerom Griffith and his firsts wife in 1651.
While the name of Jerom’s first wife is unknown, there is speculation as to who she was. John F. Dorman wrote in his seminal work, Adventurers of Purse and Person (AP&P): “George (3) Freshwater (Elizabeth (2) Bibby, William (1)…married [first] Elizabeth Mears, daughter of Bartholomew Mears (23), and [second] Elizabeth Griffith, daughter of Jerom and Elizabeth (Benthall) Griffith 24 who left undated will proved 14 Aug 1733”
The foregoing information is incorrect. This statement is based upon the following factors:
1). No evidence is provided, either primary, secondary, or circumstantial to prove a marriage between Elizabeth Benthall to Jerom Griffith.
2). Jerom’s daughter, Elizabeth, first married John Freshwater, a son of George and Elizabeth (Mears) Freshwater. They had one child named Comfort Freshwater.
3). Elizabeth (Griffith) Freshwater second married Matthew Moore, and third married William Dunton.
4). Elizabeth (Griffith) Freshwater Moore Dunton’s will was dated 27 Oct 1748/13 Dec 1748). Her will did not mention daughter Comfort, an indication she had predeceased her mother.
5.) Matthew Moore mentioned Elizabeth’s first child, Comfort in his (22 Aug 1715 / 19 Feb 1718 will as follows: “George Freshwater Sr. [father of Geo. Freshwater III] and his son Mark [Comfort’s uncle] to take Comfort Freshwater and her estate until she is of age.”
6). Elizabeth (Mears) Freshwater’s undated will was probated on 14 Aug 1733. In her will, she named “My granddaughter Comfort Dunton.”
7). George Freshwater named “My granddaughter Comfort Freshwater” in his (26 Oct 1717 / 17 Mar 17/8 will.
In defense of Dorman, he could not have had access to the detailed information of now abstracted and/or transcribed Northampton County records to which we have access today. Thus, his entry in AP&P was an honest mistake.
THE CONUMDREN
Northampton County Records, abstracted and/or transcribed between 1997 and 2003 advise us of the following:
1). Jerom Griffith apparently came to Northampton County from the Boston area.
2). Jerom was residing in Northampton county by 1660.
3). These two factors being the case, his first wife was more than likely not from Virginia’s Eastern Shore but from New England. This could be a major reason for the opacity of the records about an Elizabeth Benthall being Jerom’s first wife. Thus, the proverbial question as to who was his first wife continues to linger. Trying to uncover the answer may well require research in New England and other areas north of Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

- The marriage year is estimated upon "John Hall Senr, in-law to Eustis Parsons." was included in the October 1677 Thimbles List. With him being identified as a 'senior' is an indication that he was the father of a son who apparently died young. [5]
