Land - they inherited land |
1709 |
tract N17, between Capeville & Cheriton, Northampton Co, Virginia [4] |
- In 1696 William and Ann Willett sold 600 acres of this tract to William Baker. Two years later William and Mary Baker deeded it back to Willett so he could give them a new deed with a better description of the land and title. In 1700 William Baker (wife Mary) left to sons John and William, the former to have the western or settled part: if an unborn child was a son, he also was to share in the land. Nothing more was found concerning young William or a posthumous son. The widow Mary married Benjamin Griffith and in 1709 the Griffiths released to John Baker her dower interest in the land. In 1720 John Baker (wife Margaret) left the home part to son Josias and the rest of son John. He also had daughters Comfort and Hannah. Neither of the sons lived to enjoy the land and Margaret is known to have married a Tennant.

Marriage |
Aft. 29 Apr 1678 |
Northampton County, Virginia, USA [7, 8] |
- The estimated marriage year is based upon a 29 Apr 1678 Court Action as follows:
"William Baker 1st mar. the d/o Daniel Jackson bef. 29 Apr 1678 at Northampton County. Records reveal that William Baker was granted administration of the estate of Daniel Jackson as “…having married the daughter of the deceased.” Appraisers: were William Streape, Samuel Young, and Abraham Vansoldt."
(NOTE: The language at Probate indicates Baker was still married to Jackson's daughter, thus his marriage to Margaret Clay being after 29 April 1678.)
The marriage of William Baker, Sr., to Martha, a daughter of Thomas Clay I, is proved by the following two Court Records:
1). 6 Mar 1680: “Upon the complaint of Martha the wife of William Baker that her said husband hath very much and often beaten and abused her…” She said she feared for her life and accused her husband of consociation with another man’s wife. The Court required Baker post bond and to be “of good demeanor towards his said wife.” Additionally, the Court summoned the following James Pettiejohn [sic], Elizabeth Michael, and Mary Baker on behalf of Martha Baker; and
2). 28 May 1691: William Baker appeared in court and by oath stated “his father-in-law Thomas Clay (I), deceased, left his youngest son Benjamin to him to take as his own…” The court agreed and allowed Baker to keep Benjamin, and to pay court costs.
