  	The Upshur Family in Virginia shows he was born in 1624, but 3 depositions in Northampton Co shows 1629-1630, which was shown by Whitelaw.

  	Whitelaw shows that Rev. Thomas Teackle is said to have gone from England to Bermuda and then came to the Shore at the suggestion of his cousin Colonel Obedience Robins. When he arrived is uncertain, but in January 1652 there is reference to "Thos. Teagle Minister of the Upper parrish" so he was settled here at that time. The old Teackle Family Bible was brought by him from England when he emigrated to the Eastern Shore. The old Bible is now in the Library of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

  	Whitelaw states that during the long and effective ministry of Rev. Thomas Teackle, only one cloud overshadowed his good name and there is reason to believe that it was only a mental one in the mind of the brilliant, but erratic Col. Edmund Scarburgh. On 28 May 1656 Teackle filed a petition with the Northampton Court assembled at Occahannock that he was under several reproaches undeservedly cast upon him by Col. Edmund Scarburgh concerning an act of fornication with his wife and attempting to take away his life by poison. Although Scarburgh had never been able to prove any of those things against Teackle, and since Teackle about to depart the country under this cloud of infamy, requested the court to take the matter into serious examination and give reparations as they found needful. The county commissioners referred the case to the Governor and Council at James City, although Scarburgh declined the first charge of fornication for several reasons shown to the Court persuading to alter and better his opinion concerning his wife. (NOTE: His wife Mary was age 46 and Rev. Teackle was age 27.) Whether or not the matter ever had a further airing at James City is unknown as there is no reference to it in the few extant General Court records. On 25 June 1656, upon the petition of 35 of his parishioners of Nuswattocks Parish, the Court ruled that Thomas Teackle be pleased to officiate in his ministry having good reason to believe him to be of honest behavior since his residence in this country, which causes us to continue our good opinion notwithstanding the calumnious reproach cast up him.

  	It was on this date that Fran Pott, Wm Waters & Wm Kendall witnessed a statement by Thos: Teackle, minister, binding himself to pay Edward Littleton, Gent., 30,000 lbs tobacco as he intended to join in marriage with Isabel Douglas, widow of Lt. Col. Edwa: Douglas, dec'd, whereas she desires to reserve & keep unto her self and at her own disposing part of her present estate.

  	In his will John Martyn, merchant, of London and bound for England on the ship "Providence" of London, ready to sail. In regard of the (further?) love and affection I bear to Miss Elizabeth Douglas dau-in-law (step-daughter) to Thomas Teackle, and in regard of Mary Douglas (and to others?) now at sea, all my estate in Virginia now in the hands of Thomas Teackle except 1000#t to Thomas Teackle. Witt: John Custis, John Robins. (Note: Elizabeth Douglas married John Willett, who qualified as the administrator.)

  	It was in this year that John West discovered there were 200 acres of excess land in between A20 and A21 for which he took out a patent and 2 years later sold it to Thomas Teackle.

To brother John Parker. To Thomas Teackle. Wife Florence residual legatee together with my 6 children, wife to have 1/3 and children 2/3 as they arrive to age. Wife Exec. Charles Scarburgh & Thomas Teackle overseers. Witt: Daniel Jenifer, Ann Jenifer, Frances Taler.

  	This day William Willett, orphan, petitioned this Court that they would be pleased to take such care of his estate as by law in such cases are provided. To which end (he being almost 16 years of age) the Court put him upon the choice of a guardian: Mr. Thos. Teackle being the person nominated by him to that purpose which the Court Concedes to and have accordingly appointed the said Mr. Teackle guardian to the said William Willett to take care of him, the said Willett, and his estate and enter into bond tob e responsible for so much of the said orphan's estate as shall come to his hands. (NOTE: Rev. Thomas Teackle had married his grandmother, Isabella Douglas.)

Jacob Johnson & John Revel to divide estate Four children & their guardians Ex'rs. The land I have given my daughter Margaret I mean is only for her natural life.
