  	Upon the complaint of Kathryn the wife of Lewis White, Ensign, that William Kendall (now servant unto Mrs. Mary Drew widow (upon command of Hugh Baker overseer of the said Mrs. Drew her servants, had lately beaten an Indian (servant to the said Ensign White) where up he is run away to the Indians toward (which hath occasioned much presence for want of his service). It is therefore ordered that the said Hugh Baker shall fetch the Indian and return him to his master Ensign White and pay court charges.

Thorndike of Salem in New England and in the presence of witnesses hereafter named, declared & manifested, that of his own accord, he hath nominated, assigned, made & ordained, constituted & appointed, and in his stead place, appoint his faithful & beloved friend Capt. Francis Pott in Virginia his true and lawful attorney with full power to recover & receive & take up all debts due from the estate of Steph: Charlton dec'd, Mrs. Ann Charlton, the Extrx of said Capt. Steph: Charleton dec'd and Major Wm Waters & Capt. Wm Whittington (being the guardians for the 2/3 of the said Charlton's estate. What shall be due to Jno. Thorndike to be paid to Wm. Kendall, merchant of Virginia. And in the case the said Pott shall not accept, the said Wm. Kendall to nominate & appoint another attorney.   	These may certify all whom it may concern, that Mr. William Kendall, one of the commissioners of Northampton County alias Accomack in Virginia, did upon the request of Capt. Jno. Stringer, by his letter to him written to make payment of what tobacco was due from him the said Stringer by obligation to Mr. Augustine Harman of Manhatus [Manhattan] merchant, so to his attorney; receive; or agent (appointed by this purpose) whereupon the said Mr. Kendall sent for Mr. Levin Denwood (one of the magistrates of the said county), and formerly agent for the receiving of said tobacco from said Capt. Stringer for the said Augustine, and the said Mr. Denwood refused (before me) to accept the tobacco; or any other goods equivalent to the said debt, of the said Stringer, saying that he had order from the said Augustine not to meddle, or act any further in the premises: This argued & done before me, Francis Pott. This certificate is subscribed by Capt. Francis Pott, one of the magistrates of the Quorum in Northampton County. Recorded in Northampton County 18 June 1657.

The account showed items for Mr. Walker, Mr. Stranguidge, Mr. Gerrard in Maryland & 3 years & 6 months board & schooling for my son (3,500 lbs tobacco). It was received by Capt. Francis Pott & Mr. Wm. Kendall, lawfull Attorneyes of the Admrs of Major (General) Edward Gibbons on 29 Dec 1657 from Capt. Jno. Stringer, the full & just sume of 1,052 lbs tobacco (which was the balance of the above account) & is in full of all Bills, Bonds, Dues, specialties, or any manner of claim whatsoever from the beginning of the world unto this present day from the said Major Edward Gibbons, his hiers, Extrs or Admrs, we say received by us in full 1,052 lbs tobacco the day & year first above written.   	Whereas Col. Edmund Scarburgh did assign & set over to Capt. Francis Pott, dec'd, several parcells of land by patent at Maggotty Bay. Know ye that I, Wm. Kendall, who married the Extrx & Relict of said Pott, do assign & set over to Wm. Innis & Thomas Moor, my right, title & interest in 200 acres at the place abovesaid, also one other patent of 500 acres at Maggotty Bay, which was formerly assigned over by Mr. John Neal, late of this county, merchant, unto Col. Edmund Scarburgh & from Scarburgh to said Pott for 18,000 lbs tobacco. In a separate entry, Wm. Kendall, who married the Extrx & Relict of Capt. Francis Pott, dec'd, states that the within mentioned 200 acres was for 999 years. Witt: Wm. Waters & John Tilney. (NOTE: This was dated the day after Pott's will was proved.)

  	Whereas Capt. Francis Pott, dec'd, declared in his life time unto me the subscriber, that when he departed this Natural Life that he intended to set his Negro Bashore free, but did not mention the same in his will. Now know ye that I do by these presents set the said Bashore at liberty and proclaim him to be free from any service due to me, my Extrs or Admrs, for ever having power to do the same as by marriage of the Extrx of above said Pott and knowing assuredly the said Pott intended the same thing which I have now done and declared under my hand as my act and deed in open court this 30 May 1659.

  Anecdote	28 Jan 1662/63	Northampton Co, Virginia   [13]
  	On 28 Jan 1662/63 Daniel Baker gave a mare filly that my brother (meaning brother-in-law) Wm. Kendall assigned to me to John, Thomas & Daniel Eyres to go in a joint stock for them and if either of them die before age 21 the survivors to enjoy. An equal division is to be made when John Eyres comes to age 21 and I make my sister Susanna Kendall in trust and authorize Wm. Kendall as my attorney to acknowledge said gift in open court.
  Biography	After his first wife Ruth and his infant son William died in England, he sailed as an indentured servant to Edward Drew in the late summer of 1650 on the Peter and John with his new master. He began his live in Virginia as an indentured servant and became the Speaker of the House of Burgesses. He was a senior justice of the N'hamp Co Court, Colonel in the militia and one of the wealthiest men on the Eastern Shore.

  	Whereas I, Lt. Col. William Kendall, am possessed of 1,500 acres of land at Maggity Bay in N'hamp Co, which is known as Golden Quarter, I acknowledge that my possession is only in right of John Eyre, Thomas Eyre & Daniel Eyre sons of Mr. Thomas Eyre dec'd, to whom the land belonged. I released all my rights in this land to them, except my rights as their guardian, until they attain lawful age. The eldest to have his part and the other two proportionally each of them as they attain lawfull age. Witt: William Waters, Wil: Jones, William Andrewes, Thomas Rideinge & John Michaell Senr.

  	In 1685 William Kendall gave 700 acres of this tract to his daughter Mary and her husband Hancock Lee, saying that it was where they were then living. They were to have a life interest, and then the land was entailed to their daughter Anna and her heirs. In his will of the next year, Kendall confirmed this gift and also left jointly to Mary Lee and a son William Kendall 60 acres and the "Tanne house." This was on the branch at the south and eventually became a part of the Lee Land. Not long afterwards the Lees moved across the bay where he is said to have built the first Ditchley. Anna Lee married William Armistead, whom she survived, and also a son John. In 1754 Anna and her grandson John Armistead petitioned the Assembly to have the entail docked for this land, which was granted and they sold to Littleton Eyre.

Negro woman Sue?, her child James, and her younger child (all now in the possession of Hancock Lee) to my granddau. Anna Lee (when 16), the eldest dau. of Hancock Lee and Mary my dau. his now wife. My Tannehouse with 60 A. together with the tanner (my n. man Siscoe) and the boy Rabishaw to my son William Kendall and my dau. Mary Lee, but for want of their issue to John Kendall the son of my kinsman John Kendall dec'd, Thomas Eyre, Daniel Eyre, and Elizabeth Eyre, Jr. The lands sold by me to Thomas Moore dec'd and Thomas Poynter to be released to them by my sons-in-law John Eyre, Thomas Eyre, and Daniel Eyre. To my loving wife Sarah Kendall for life 300 A. at Hungers lately purchased by me from Mr. John Bellamy whereon my son William Kendall now liveth, and half my land at Scotch Quarter on the sea side purchased of (Capt.) William Whittington, the remaining half of Scotch Quarter to my granddau. Susanna Kendall. To my granddau. Kendall Lee, the youngest dau. of Hancock Lee and my dau. Mary, 1000 A. being part of my 4200 A. in Accomack Co., 400 A. of the 1000 A. having been leased to Henry Towles and 100 A. to another man.
