- In his will John Savage Sr gave Elizabeth W. Kelly, wife of Martin K. Kelly, the land where I at present reside known as "Cedar Grove", 300 acres, and then to her children. To Elizabeth W. Kelly $1,000, upon condition that she or her heirs shall pay to my former slave, Handy Savage, $100 every year during his life. To Catherine F. Gibb $5,000. To Thomas B. C. Gibb a judgment against him in the name of William Bloodgood for the sum of $2,000. To Catherine B. Bagwell, widow of Augustus W. Bagwell dec'd, $1,000. The bond I hold of Obediah S. Byrd for $1,100, to Mary Marshall, Virginia Mears, and Hetty Byrd, wife of said Obediah, who were the children of Thomas Mears by his first wife, Catharine Justice, equally. To brother, Griffin Savage, $2,000. To Nephew, Richard T. Savage, $2,000. To nephew Jeremiah Jeter Savage, $2,000. To nephew William Savage, $1,000. To nephew Eli Savage, $1,000. To niece Catherine Tull, $1,000. To Robert Warner, son of Isaac Warner, dec'd, $500. To Mary Ann Onley, wife of John Onley, $500. To Mary Ann Gibbons $5,000. To Betty White and John White, children of Thomas S. White, $5,000 equally divided. To John Cropper, son of the late Capt. Thomas B. Cropper, my gold watch. My executrix to have my grave bricked and covered with a marble slab, similar to those covering the graves of my deceased wives. The balance of my estate equally to Catherine F. Gibb and Elizabeth W. Gibbons, I do give and devise to the said Mary Ann and her heirs forever, that parcel of land on which I now live, known as Cedar Grove, 350 acres, upon condition that she or her heirs pay to Handy Savage, my former slave, the sum of $100 during his natural life. 8 July 1875.
