- He was a private in the 9th Virginia Regiment 1776-78 and then a seaman on the schooner Betsey which was captured by the British on 12 Apr 1780 and imprisoned until May 1782.

- In his will Thomas Bagwell of St. George Parish gave to wife Peggy Bagwell the plantation on which I now reside containing 100 acres. To my half-sister Sarah Poulson the house in which she now lives with 3 acres. To my wife Peggy Bagwell the remainder part of the tract given to my sister Sarah, the whole tract containing 25 acres bounded by the county road on the west, lands of Abel Garrison on the north. Upon wife's death to brother Isaiah Bagwell the aforesaid tract of land containing 25 acres & he is to pay George Poulson, son of my sister Sarah Poulson, $100. To brother Isaiah Bagwell, at the death of my wife, the land where I now live & if he dies without issue, then to brother George Bagwell. To brother Isaiah Bagwell all my land on Cedar Island. To wife Peggy the store house & lot containing 9 acres called Stewart's Store lying on the westward side of the Sea Side county road near the head of Wachapreague. To brother George P. Bagwell the land bounded on the west by the land of Southey Bloxom & the east by the land of Susannah Wharton & John Wharton containing 90 acres & out of this I lend 5 acres to Moses London & Esther his wife & at their death to brother George P. Bagwell. Brother George to pay my sister Sarah Poulson annually for 5 years 3 barrels of Indian corn. To wife the term of service to be completed of Moses London agreeable to the deed of manumission on record & he is to go free if my wife dies before such term & also to wife my black girl Leah & at wife's death Leah to be free. To sisters Elizabeth Jones Wise, wife of George E. Wise of Nansemond, & Sarah Poulson £50 each. To Ezar Poulson, son of George Poulson, £3 & also to Esther Sampson, Daniel Sampson & Jacob Sampson, black people who I manumitted, each £3 to be paid out of the store. To my nephew William Bagwell ... The residue to wife Peggy, except the $100 which I give to the Bishops of the Methodist Church in the United States. Brothers Isaiah & George Bagwell Extrs. - In his will Isaiah Bagwell gave to my wife Christian Bagwell my half of the unexpired time of service of Negro man Anthony & my half of Negro children Malinda & Samuel until they arrive to age 21 & then they shall go free & Negro girl Maria to be maintained out of my estate, she being to much afflicted to set free & $400 & the balance,except those parts hereafter disposed of. To my grandson Isaiah Newton Bagwell $500 & a pair of gold sleeve buttons engraved "I. B." & my watch. To my granddaughter Anna Goldie Walston $50, … & ½ dozen silver teaspoons marked "K. G." & my interest in Negro girl Rosina until she arrives at age 21 & then she to go free. To daughter-in-law Margaret G. Bagwell ... To my great grandsons Samuel Walston & William Bagwell Walston ... To my son William Bagwell $120 & also my pension that may be due at my death. To my freed woman Silvy my Negro girl Harriet (which was born of Silvy while a slave) until Harriet comes to age 21 & then to be free. To son William Bagwell at the death or marriage of his mother the whole of my estate. My son William Bagwell & his wife to live with his mother & jointly carry on the farm together as he & I have done for 17 or 18 years. William is to take of care of his aged mother as she has no relations in this country except his own family. Son William Bagwell & my grandson Isaiah Newton Bagwell Extrs. Witt: William R. Custis & Henry Bagwell. His will was proved 28 May 1840.
