- 27 Aug 1920 (Passengers Leave Burning Bugeye) - Boat of Moody Miles Burns in Bay - All Cash Aboard, Clothing and Jewelry Lost - Sanford, VA - On 25 August the bugeye "Burnette" loaded with 456 baskets of tomatoes owned by Mr. Moody Miles was partially destroyed by a fire caused by an expolding lantern last week. The boat was between Turkey Point and Chesapeake Locks whe the fire occured. Mr. and Mrs. Miles and their two sons were forced to take to the yawl, or life boat, and reached Chesapeake City about two hours later. The burning bugeye was sighted by a passing steamer and the flames were extinguished, not however, before they had done about $4,500 damage. The explosion of the gasoline tank and the hasty spread of the flames, drove Mr. Miles and his family to abandon all their personal property. All the cash aboard, a considerable quantity of clothing, two gold watches, a valuable cameo and other jewelry belonging to Mrs. Miles was lost. The boat is now at the Tull shipyard at Pocomoke undergoing repairs. Thee is said to have been no insurance.

- 25 Feb 1921 (Sanford News) - Capt. Moody Miles was home last week, just returned from the Potomac River, with a load of oysters. It will be remembered that Capt. Miles ' Bugeye was burned a short time ago near Chesapeake City, he had had the boat rebuilt and changed the name from the Bernette to the C.F. Russell.

- Mr. Moody Kellam Miles Sr., aged 76 years, highly respected citizen of Saxis died at his home Wednesday March 10th. Funeral services will be held at the Saxis Methodist Church, of which he was a very active member, on Sunday March 14th, at 2:30 pm, conducted by the Rev. Herbert P. Hall, Rev. Frank Clark and Rev. F.C. Fulcher. Interment will be in the Miles cemeery, Saxis. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nolan F. Miles, one daughter, Mrs. Juanita Miles Porter of Saxis, five sons, Moody Everett Miles of Saxis, Vernon Chesnut Miles of Pocomoke, Moody K. Miles Jr. of Saxis, Wilson Coleman Miles of Parksley, Jesse T. Miles of Saxis; two step-children, Lynwood Russell of Pocomoke and Mrs. Florence Smith of Jenkins Bridge, fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. (Pen. Ent. & Eastern Shore News, 11 Mar 1954). Family members report that he had 3 strokes near the end of his life and he died as a result of the last one, which left him only able to blink his eyes during the last 8-9 days of his life.
