- In 1707 Henry Ayres and his wife Comfort, a daughter of Matthew and Hannah Scarbrough, of Mount Scarbrough, then in Somerset, but later in Worcester County, sold his 250 acres of this tract to William Chance. In 1726 Chance died intestate and was succeeded by a son William, who in 1751 left the 250 acres to a grandson William Coard. In 1813 William Coard (wife Scarburgh) left the north 150 acres to a son William. At that time the property extended only up to the branch which now runs through it, and the part between the branch and the crossroad was obatined later. In 1885 William R. Coard left as 200 acres to his son William H. Coard, a doctor, who increased his acreage and left a much larger property. In 1902 in a division of his estate, the house and 100 acres were bought by Thmas W. Shreaves, who with his wife Mary F. resold to Arthur R. Coard. In 1911 to settle his estae, a commissioner sold 366 acres to John D. Grant, Jr. and George W. Jones; five years later the latter and his wife Nola N. sold his interest to his partner. In 1940 trustees sold to Arthur C. Evans. It is called the Coard Place and one brick end contains a brick is marked WC 1780, so it must have been built during the ownership of the first William Coard.
