  	Edward Yeomans acquired land in Port Royal, Jamacia, part of which he subsequently let to Robert Snead (or Sneed) "late of the city of London, architect," for a term of 13 years from August 1684. The deed referring to this transaction contains one of the most illuminating references to the style of building in Port Royal at this time. Snead, "at his own proper cost", was required to "build three or four substantial houses, fronting the harbour, each to have a cookroom and a house of office, with a balcony to each house fronting to the sea northward, of eight feet long and three and a half feet in the cheare"..

  	In his 20 Sept 1697 letter to Sr. John Houblon, Robert Snead says he had moved his family to Philadelphia only two years prior. A letter from Francis Jones to William Penn is read before the Commissioners, stating Markham, notwithstanding Jones's anger against him as the best fitted man to administer the colony satisfactorily "until some turbulent and discontented people from other colonies, particularly one Snead from Jamaica, had arrived and started a correspondence with Maryland."

  	William Markham supposedly sold protection to pirates at £100 per head. Markham also allowed his daughter to marry James Brown one of Avery's crewmen. Brown was later elected to the Pennsylvania Assembly although he was subsequently expelled. "Robert Snead, a successful pirate captain, was appointed Justice of the Peace in Pennsylvania."

  	Robert Snead, in his 10 Aug 1696 letter to Sir John Houblon, noted that a proclamation came to his hands and another to Mr. Penn's deputy, William Markham. Snead complains of Leience toward piracy. Snead may have been placed in Philadelphia by the Board of Trade to thwart pirates as well as to build Christ Church.

  	Robert Snead in his letter dated 1 Jun 1697 to Nicholson (Governor of Maryland)… saying he siezed some pirates and confined as was his duty… Gov Markham and others so violently opposed me that not only threatened to committ me but encourage pirates to affront me that I fear violence either by imprisonment or other ways every minut by them. Snead please for protection from Nicholson Sends message by M. Perry, a worthy gentleman to deliver to Nicholson's hand "which were it not for my Estate not being in order would heartily kkiss this spring & pay my duty, but dare not for fear of some trick, the reason of my taking them up is for fear of their making overto Seize them."

  	In a letter dated 24 Jun 1697 to to Nicholson, Snead stands ready to execute the pirates that escaped from Markham. Has written to Coll. Quarry and given him an account of what happened.

  	Robert Snead, a substantial settler of Pennsylvania and a magistrate, strongly supported raising a militia to defend against pirates who had taken refuge in the city. As Magistrate, Snead received orders that demanded the arrest of persons committing acts of piracy specifically those of Henry Avery who had taken up residence in Philadelphia. William Penn's representative, William Markham an infamous supporter of colonial piracy, blatantly refused to comply with orders. Markham thwarted Snead's every effort and ordered the Sheriff to disarm Snead leaving him defenseless to ride home which was five miles outside town. Snead became furious with Markham and brought his actions before the council by writing a letter to Sir John Houblon dated 20 Sep 1697 complaining that he was unable to perform his duties as Magistrate due to the interference of Markham.

  	Robert Snead was summoned to appear in New York City before Edward Randolph, Attorney General to give a deposition to be used against William Penn. Snead wrote to Gov. Nicholson complaining of the lenient treatment of pirates in Philadelphia by Gov. Markham, and the Quakers unwillingness to raise a militia to protect the city stating he'd "gladly sell his interest for half the worth than stay if it continues."

  	"Whatever may be said of Robert Snead, who had been a carpenter in Jamaica, he was valiant, a quality which apparently had caused him to receive the rank of Captain and a seat on the local bench." Markham was stripped of his governorship in 1699 but Snead had created a powerful enemy in William Penn. On 21August 1701 Snead petitioned for leave from his position as Deputy, to oversee the building of the new Capitol (in Williamsburg). His plans were presented on 29 August 1701 and denied on 5 September 1701. Snead purchased land in York County in 1701 and in 1702 gives bond to administer the estate of John Garret (dec'd) in York County.

  	On the first day of the court Mr. Robert Snead presented to the court a letter from Edmund Jennings, Esq, Secretary of the State of Virginia “purporting that upon ye relinquishment of John Washbourne of ye place and office of Clerk of this County, he had appointed Mr. Robert Snead the cl[er]k of ye sd county.” The records were to be delivered to Snead after took the oaths, but he agreed to wait till the close of the court so the present clerk “might have ye benefit thereof.” Snead, who again presented the letter and his commission, was now sworn; John Washbourne (the former clerk) was ordered to deliver the records to Snead. (NOTE: This was the first time his name appeared in Accomack Co Order Books.) Snead had likely continued his relationship with Governor Francis Nicholson of Maryland because Edmund Jenings, Secretary of the State of Virginia favored Nicholson and no doubt it was for that reason, he appointed Snead as Clerk of Court for Accomack County, Virginia.

  	In 1705 the county prison was considered insufficient to hold a certain prisoner and the room that Robert Snead, clerk of court, used for his office was ordered used as a prison until a new one could be built. In the same year Robert Snead was one of 6 residents of the county appointed to make a contract with workman for the building of a new court house, for the old court house was thought by the court to be past repairing. The site of the new court house was close to the building in the area known as Matompkin where court had been held and was also close to the present court house in the same area, which after the Revolutionary War became known as Drummondtown and about a century later changed its name again to Accomac.

  	This indenture made 6 Sep 1709 between William Hargos of Accomack Co and Robert Snead of the same place, Gent. The said William Hargos sold to Robert Snead for 7,500 lbs tobacco 150 acres within the bounds of 600 acres granted to Christopher Thompson by patent, the 600 acres bounded at the head of that neck of land which is made by the northern branch of Deep Creek and the southern branch of Hunting Creek, bounded on the northwest by land formerly of John Arue and also the land that was Mr. Brounes and divided from the land of a line draw from Hunting Creek branch southwest unto Deep Creek branch bounded northward by part of Hunting Creek southern branch and part of a line drawn from S.E. by S 370 & thence by a line running . . . Witt: Hanc Custis & Katherine West. Acknowledged in open court by William Hargos to Robert Snead 4 Oct 1709 & recorded 22 Nov 1709. He also owned land along the Indian River in Maryland, which he called Snead's Purchase. The time of his arrival in Virginia isn't known, but it was probably before 1700, for in 1703 he became Clerk of Court for Accomack County, which position he held until his death in 1712, when he was followed by his son Charles as clerk.

  	Charges were brought against "Robert Snead of the County of Accomac" by Abraham Le Messurier, Commander of the ship "Starr" - frigate complaining that Snead had seized the ship under the pretense of illegal trade and that he had brought his son Robert Snead, Jr. among others and "had taken away goods belonging to him." In addition, he was forced to pay 25 pounds sterling before Snead would release his ship.

  	In April 1711 the court clerk, Robert Snead became sick and was unable to attend court. Upon Robert's petition, his son Charles Snead was sworn to officiate as the clerk till his father was able to return. A year and a half later, Robert was dead and Charles officially took over. At that time he presented the court with a commission from the secretary of state of Virginia, appointing him as the court clerk. After Charles took the oaths, the court ordered Mary Snead (widow of Robert Snead, the late clerk) to deliver all the records of the county to Charles Snead. In March 1713/14 another, younger, Robert Snead saw an opportunity, understanding that the court was not supplied with a cryer, he petitioned that the position be given to him. After considering the matter, the court appointed Snead as cryer-and janitor. They ordered him "to keep ye Corthouse swept Clean & to keep ye D0ores Shut." Snead would be paid 940 lbs tobacco that year "for his paines & Troubles."

  	On 4 Oct 1706 Madam Matilda West (executrix of Col. John West, (deceased), John Wise (in the right of his wife, Matilda), Jonathan West, Richard Kellam (in right of his wife Farncis), Katherin West, Robert Snead (in right of his wife Mary), Thomas Harding (in right of his wife Scarburgh Harding) the sons and daughters of Col. John West and Matilda, petitioned that the estate be divided according to the will. Since most of the persons desired that John Custis, Exp., be appointed, it was ordered that the and col. William Custis, Lt. Col. Tully Robinson, Maj. George Parke and Capt. John Braudhurst (or any four of them) divide the estate of John West before the next court or as soon as convenient. On 6 Dec 1706 Robert Snead and his wife Mary (one of the daughters of Lt. Col. John West, deceased) exhibited a bill against Matilda West (executrix), who was summons to this court. The sheriff returned a copy of the writ (with the summons on the back) that was left at Matilda's dwelling house. When she did not appear, Snead's attorney (Mr. Andrew Hamelton) requested and was granted an attachment against "ye body of Matilda West" the sheriff was to deep her in safe custody till she posted a bond to appear at the next court. On 5 Feb 1706/7 Robert Snead and his wife Mary (daughter of Lt. Col. John West, deceased) brought an action against Matilda West (executrix of the estate), who was taken into custody on 31 Jan by Sheriff Tully Robinson to ensure her appearance at this court. Matilda refused to put her answer in writing. West had left his "four daughters viz Catherine Mary Ann & Scarburgh each a young slave in the estate. Snead and Matilda West ultimately reached an agreement. Snead would give up his right to Mary's share of cattle, Horses, sheep and household goods. Matilda would have her first choice of the six young slaves (she selected Sarah). Catherine West could have second choice (Bette). Snead would have third choice (Gui). The court ordered Matilda to immediately deliver to Gui to Snead.
