- It was on this date that William Andrews gave 130 acres of this tract to his daughter Leah, the wife of James Pettigrew. It was the east end of the land along the bayside road. After the death of Pettigrew in 1772, Leah gave this land to her son John, and 5 years later he and wife Anne sold it, along with some other acreage, to Nathaniel L. Savage of Northampton, who by that time had become the owner of the rest of the Andrews land.

- In his will William Pettigrew of the Town and County of Southampton, Esquire, directed that all my just debts and funeral expenses and the charge of proving my will shall be fully paid. To wife Ann Pettigrew £2,000 lawful money of Great Britain and not subject to any deduction whatsoever in case my personal estate shall fall short for payment out of the other legacies by me herein after bequeathed.
To my brother Gavin Pettigrew of Glasgow, Wright, £400 lawful money of Great Britain and the further sum of £200 lawful money of Great Britain to be paid to him upon Trust, that he, his executors and administrators shall lay out the last mentioned sum of £200 in public stocks or funds or on some other good and sufficient security either public or private and the dividends, interest and profits thereof shall pay during the life of my sister Margaret, the wife of Patrick Simpson of Glasgow, merchant, for the sole and separate use and benefit of my said sister Margaret only, and not for the use of the said Patrick Simpson, her husband. After the decease of my said sister Margaret upon this further Trust, that the said Gavin Pettigrew his executors and administrators do pay, employ and dispose of the sum of £200 last mentioned and all the dividends, interest, and profits that shall be then be due amongst all and every child or children of my said sister Margaret that shall be living at the time of her decease. But if it shall happen that my said sister Margaret shall not leave any child living at the time of her decease, then and in such case my will is that the said sum of £200 last mentioned shall be divided between my brothers Gavin Pettigrew, John Pettigrew and James Pettigrew and my sisters Ann Dick the wife of Mr _____ Dick, Cecil Pettigrew and Agnes Syme, the wife of James Syme of Glasgow, weaver, and my cousins John Dougal, Jane Dougal, William Dougal and Bethia Dougal, children of my late sister Bethia Dougal, deceased, late wife of John Dougal of Glasgow, merchant, or such of them as shall survive the said Margaret. My said brothers and sisters to have an equal share and proportion and my cousins to have only such equal share and proportion as their late mother Bethia would have been intitled to if living and as either of their uncles and aunts have such share to be equally divided between them, part and share alike.
Also, to my said brother Gavin Pettigrew the further Sum of £300 of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid to him upon Trust, that the said Gavin Pettigrew his executors and administrators shall lay out the last mentioned £300 in some or one of the public stocks or funds or on some other good sufficient security either public or private and the dividends, interest and profits thereof shall pay during the life of my said sister Ann, the wife of the said _____ Dick, for the sole and separate use of my said sister Ann only and not for the use of _____ Dick, her husband. After the decease of my said sister Ann upon this further Trust, that the said Gavin Pettigrew his executors or administrators shall pay the sum of £300 last mentioned and all the dividends, interest and profits that shall be then be due and amongst all and every child or children of my said sister Ann that shall be living at the time of her decease. But if it shall happen that my said sister Ann shall not leave any child living at the time of her decease, then and in such case my will is that the sum of £300 last mentioned shall be divided between my brothers Gavin Pettigrew, John Pettigrew and James Pettigrew and my sisters Margaret Simpson, Cecil Pettigrew and Agnes Syme and my said cousins John Dougal, Jane Dougal, William Dougal, and Bethia Dougal or any of them that shall survive the said Ann. After the decease of my said sister Agnes, upon this further Trust, the said Gavin Pettigrew his executors or administrators shall pay the said sum of £200 last mentioned and all the dividends, interest and profits that shall be then due amongst all and every child and children of my said sister Agnes that shall be living at the time of her decease. But if it shall happen that my said sister Agnes shall not leave any child living at the time of her decease, then my will is that the sum of £200 last mentioned shall be divided between my brothers Gavin Pettigrew, John Pettigrew and James Pettigrew and my sisters Margaret Simpson, Ann Dick and Cecil Pettigrew and my cousins John Dougal, Jane Dougal, William Dougal, and Bethia Dougal or such of them as shall survive, my brothers and sisters to have an equal share and proportion and my cousins to have only such share and proportion as their late mother Bethia would have been intitled to if living as either of their uncles and aunts shall have such share to be equally divided between them, part and share alike.
Also, I give and bequeath unto my brother Gavin Pettigrew the further sum £200 of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid to him upon Trust, that the said Gavin Pettigrew his executors and administrators shall lay out the said last mentioned sum of £200 in some or one of the public stocks or funds or on some other good and sufficient security either public or private and the dividends, interest and profits thereof shall be payed towards the education and maintenance of my said cousins, John Dougal, Jane Dougal, William Dougal, and Bethia Dougal, children of my late sister Bethia Dougal, until they shall respectively attain their several ages of 21 years. And upon this further Trust that the said Gavin Pettigrew his executors and administrators shall and do as my cousins John, Jane, William and Bethia Dougal shall attain their respective ages of 21 years, pay to each of them the sum of £50, part of the said sum of £200 last mentioned. But if any or either of my said cousins shall happen to dye before he she or they shall arrive to his her or their respective ages of 21 years, then upon this further Trust, that Gavin Pettigrew his executors and administrators shall pay the part or share of him, her or them amongst the survivors or survivor or them in equal shares and proportions.
Also, I give and bequeath to Gavin Pettigrew the further sum of £200 of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid upon Trust for the use and benefit of and equally divided between my said brothers John Pettigrew and James Pettigrew, but if either of my said brothers John Pettigrew and James Pettigrew shall happen to dye before me, then my will is that the part or share of him so dying shall be divided between the survivor of them and my brothers and sisters Gavin Pettigrew, Margaret Simpson, Agnes Syme, Ann Dick, and Cecil Pettigrew, and my said cousins John Dougal, Jane Dougal, William Dougal, and Bethia Dougal, or such of them as shall survive me. My said brothers and sisters to have an equal share and proportion and my said cousins to have only such share as their late mother Bethia would have been intitled to if living and as either of their uncles and aunts shall have such share alike.
Also I give to Gavin Pettigrew the further sum of £10 of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid upon Trust to Grisell Johnson, daughter of Robert Johnson, late of Glasgow, merchant, and Grizell his wife, formerly known by the name of Grizell Pettigrew.
Also, I give and bequeath to each and every of the children of my brother Thomas Pettigrew, who shall be living at the time of my decease, the several and respective sums of £10 lawful money of Great Britain, to be paid by my executrix to my said brother Gavin Pettigrew for their respective use and benefit.
And I do hereby declare my will to be that my said brother Gavin Pettigrew shall accept receive and take out such Mortgages Bonds Notes and other Securities which I shall leave at the time of my decease for any sum or sums of money then due and owing to me from any person or persons then residing in any parts of Scotland in satisfaction of such part of the said legacy's herein before given upon the Trusts herein before mentioned as the sum or sums of money due and owing on such Security or Securities shall amount unto and shall give good and sufficient Release or Releases, Discharge or Discharges for the same as if so much money had actually been paid in cash. And my will is that upon payment of the several legacies herein before given to my said brother Gavin Pettigrew upon the several Trusts aforesaid and the said legacies given to the children of my said brother Thomas Pettigrew to him the said Gavin Pettigrew, the Release or Releases Acquaintance or Acquaintances of him the said Gavin Pettigrew shall good and effectual Discharges to my executor herein after named and that she, my said executrix shall not after the payment of the said several legacies to the said Gavin Pettigrew, be answerable for or subject or liable to make good any loss or deficiency of any part of the said legacies by the said Gavin Pettigrew occasioned by his lending or putting out the same on defective security or otherwise howsoever provided, nevertheless and I do hereby declare my will to be that in case I shall leave any child or children by the said Ann, my beloved wife, living at the time of my decease or if my said wife shall be Encient of child, then and in either of the said cases, I do hereby declare that the several legacies herein before given to my said brother Gavin Pettigrew as well as for his own use or upon Trust for my said brothers, sisters and cousins in manner herein before mentioned and also the said legacies herein before given to the children of my brother Thomas Pettigrew shall be totally void and of no effect to all intents and purposes whatsoever, and then and in such case I do hereby give and bequeath unto all and every child or children that shall be living at the time of my decease and to all and every child or children of which my said wife shall be Encient at the time of my decease the full sum of £200 of lawful money of Great Britain to be equally divided between them, part and share alike.
Also, all the residue and remainder of my goods, chattels, ready money and money in public funds or on other securities either public or private and all other real and personal estate of what nature sort or kind so ever (after my debts, legacies, funeral expenses and the charge of proving this will are fully satisfied, contented and paid) I give and bequeath unto my dear wife Ann Pettigrew, her heirs executors and administrators for her and their own use and benefit absolutely forever. And I do hereby make, nominate, constitute and appoint my said wife Ann Pettigrew sole executrix of this my last will and testament and revoking all former and other wills by me heretofore made do make and ordain this only to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have to each sheet of this my last will and testament contained in four sheets of paper set my hand and seal the twentieth day of October in the six and twentieth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland king defender of the Faith and so forth and in the year of our Lord 1752. Wm Pettigrew signed, sealed, published and declared by the above named William Pettigrew the testator to be his last will and testament in the presence of us who at his request and in his presence and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses hereunto: Thomas Stanyfurd & W Goodenough.
This will was proved at London the twenty seventh day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty seven before the Right honorable Sir George Lee, knight doctor of the Laws, Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, lawfully constituted by Oath of Ann Pettigrew, widow, relict of the deceased and sole executrix named in the said will to whom administration was granted to all and singular the Goods, Chattels, and Credits of the said deceased having first been sworn by Commission duly administered.

- Abstract of the will of James Pettigrew (by Stratton Nottingham): James Pettigrew directed that wife Leah sell 50 acres of land purchased of Richard Hinman for the payment of my debts. To son "Pettigrew" the remaining part of said tract, being 50 acres. To son John Pettigrew 300 acres purchased of William Andrews. Son Gavin Pettigrew (under age) residual legatee. To son Gavin Pettigrew the legacies left me by my brother William Pettigrew at the death of my two sisters Margaret Simpson and Agnes (-----). Wife Executrix. Witnesses Robert Moore and Rebecca Walker.
Transcription of full will of James Pettigrew provided by Lindsay Pettigrew: I James Pettigrew being Good Health & Perfect memory do make and appoint this my last will & Testament in writing as followith Item I give to my wife Leah Pettigrew fifty acres of the land I bought of Richard Hinman joyning to Jonathon Mears land to sell and pay my just Debts for that use and no other use whatsoever. I do give her full Power & Lawfull Authority to make a good & Lawfull to any person or Persons whatsoever as my think proper to bye the said land as if I had sold the said land my self to them & their heirs forever it is my will & Desire that niether of my sons nor their heirs shall revoke or Disanul the sail of the aforesaid land forever. Item I give to my son Pettigrew the remaining part of that parcell of Land being fifty acres which I bought of Richard Hinman to him & his heirs forever ^ (( carat, margin note )) Item I give to my son Gavin Pettigrew my negroes as followith Lucy (( ???)) Ferne & Jenny & Rose & their increase to him & his heirs forever Item I give to my son John Pettigrew three hundred acres of land I bought of William Andrews to him & his heirs forever
Item I lend to my wife Leah Pettigrew during her life or widowhood my still then I give to my son Pettigrew his riding horse to him and his heirs. Item I lend to my wife Leah Pettigrew my Riding Chair during her Widowhood or life then I give the same to my son Gavin Pettigrew & his heirs.
Item I lend to my wife Leah Pettigrew my Negro boy called Able and my Negro woman called Priscilla & her increase to my wife during her natural life Provided she claims no more thirds of my Negroes and at her death I give the said Negroes Able & Priscilla and her increase to my son Gavin Pettigrew & his heirs forever. Item I give to my son Gavin Pettigrew all the remaining part of my estate excepting my wifes third and first paying my just debts and the Remaining Part sold & the money put to interest for him untill he arives at Age to him and his heirs forever. My will & Desire is that if my wife maintain & school my son Gavin for the Profits of his negroes without Ruining his Estate in Debt she shall have the liberty without any Person inter medling with him or his Estate. Item I give unto my son Gavin Pettigrew the legacies left me by my Brother William Pettigrew at the Death of my two sisters Margaret Simpson & Agnes Syme to him & his heirs forever and I do appoint my wife Leah Pettigrew to be whole Executrix of this my last will & testament and see it duly performed in Presence whereof I have set my Hand seal April 20th 1771. At the Court held in Accomack County 26th May 1772 the above last will and testament of James Pettigrew was proved by the oaths of the witnesses thereto and admitted to Record.
Charles Bagwell being first appointed his Guardian and being present and having nothing to object and on the motion of Leah Pettigrew taking the oath and giving Jas. Berry, Sebastian Croper & Raleigh Justice for her securities who acknowledged a bond for that purpose Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probate thereof in due for form. George Holden, Clerk of Court.
