Anecdote |
- He (wife Mary) left 330 acres from Whitelaw's tract A104 ((ITAL:)John Simpson Part(:ITAL)) that he had inherited from his father Thomas Simpson Sr. and other lands in the vicinity to his son Thomas; according to his father's will he had inherited 200 acres, and is known to have bought 60 acres from tract A117, which leaves 70 acres unaccounted for. In 1760 his son Thomas left to his sisters Siner, Mary and Ann, who married respectively Ralph Justice, Charles Bayly and Thomas W. Rodgers; the land was divided by cross lines parallel to the north line of the tract, the Baylys getting the north strip, the Rodgers the middle and the Justices the one next to the John Dix land. (ITAL:)Mary Bayly Part(:ITAL): In 1765 Mary Bayly and her husband Charles sold her third to Thomas W. Rodgers. After his death, his widow Ann married Jonathan West and in 1770 the Wests sold this original Bayly part to Charles West, who in 1794, with his wife Anne, sold as 104 acres to Charles Rew. ((ITAL:)Ann Rodgers Part(:ITAL)): In 1792 Ann West, as widow of her second husband Jonathan West, sold her own inherited 104 acres to Southy Simpson, who had married her daughter Hannah Rodgers; another daughter, Polly Rodgers, was living on the property, so perhaps what Ann intended to convey was only her life interest in half of it. In 1794 the Simpsons sold to the Overseers of the Poor, the deed stating that they were selling only half of the land; no deed from Polly Rodgers was ever found, but all of this part eventually was owned by the Overseers. ((ITAL:)Sinah Justice Part(:ITAL)): After the deaths of Sinah and Ralph Justice, the title to this part passed to a son William, who in 1805 with his wife Sarah sold their 104 acres to the Overseers "for the use and support of the poor house which has been erected in this county." The Overseers thus owned 208 acres, and while it is not now owned by the county, no disposition of it was ever found.
