- In 1847, Thorogood Dix purchased the largest and oldest farm in Jolly's Neck and moved his family out of the Guilford area into the big house there. In his will he bequeathed money and slaves to sons and daughters, directed that his possessions be sold and the profits divided among his children - although not "until a settlement of the present difficulties between the North and South" - and to Julia, his wife of 18 years, left not one thing (E.S.
