  	On 30 Nov 1782 the Battle of the Barges took place in Kedge's Straits in the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay, the same day the articles of peace were signed between England and the infant republic-to-be, and was the last naval engagement of the Revolutionary War. Six days after the battle Col. John Cropper sent a report to his superior Col. William Davis, in Richmond. Capt. Thomas Parker, Mr. William Gibb and Mr. Evans escaped being wounded (probably) by leaping overboard at the alarm of the barge blowing up.

  	For years William Gibb had been Naval Officer for Accomack County, living in Onancock and having supervison over the two official ports, Onancock (tract A71) and Folly Landing (tract A69. In 1787 he wrote to the governor referring to a recent act requiring the Naval Officer to live at the County Seat. He went on to say tha this salary of £50 per year did not justify his making the move, so he resigned. He continued to buy in the vicinity of Onancock until he had accumulated a plantation of 600 acres, which he called Montrose.
