- Nell Johnson Bryant, 95, of the 2900 block of Sterling Point Drive, died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, in her home.
Born in Deep Creek, Norfolk County, she was the daughter of the late John Moore and Nell Brooks Johnson. She was a member of the Class of 1923 at Randolph-Macon Woman's College and taught school in Deep Creek and in Accomack County. She was the widow of Dr. Richard Orman Bryant, a retired minister of the Virginia United Methodist Church Conference, and was his partner as he served churches and districts throughout Virginia from their marriage in 1926 until his death in 1985. His appointments in Eastern Virginia included Cradock United Methodist Church, Drummondtown United Methodist Church, Park Place United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, the Portsmouth-Newport News District, the Peninsula District, and the Portsmouth District. Upon retirement, he served as associate minister of Epworth United Methodist Church.
She had been an active member of Epworth Church since 1973 and for 10 years was leader of the Nell Bryant Circle, which was named in her honor. She also attended and was honorary Class Mother of the Wesleymen Bible Class.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne B. Nock of Onancock, Va., and Nell B. Richardson and her husband, Barrett, of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Ellen R. Davenport, Barrett R. Richardson, John B. Richardson, Sarah B. Nock and Dr. Levin F. Nock; a niece, Elizabeth W. Laine; a nephew, Dr. William J. Waldo; two great-nieces; and five great-nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Virginia Bryant, and a son-in-law, L. Floyd Nock III.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Epworth United Methodist Church by the Rev. Stephen H. Butler, the Rev. Charles Blalock, and the Rev. W. Dabney Walters. Burial will be private in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Cox Funeral Home and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 2920 Sterling Point Drive. Memorial contributions may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, 124 W. Freemason St., Norfolk, Va. 23510 or to the R. Orman and Nell J. Bryant Scholarship Fund at Virginia Wesleyan College, 1584 Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, Va. 23502.
