Obituary |
18 Oct 1976 |
Baltimore, Maryland [11] |
- Capt. Horace Coulson Jefferson, chairman emeritus of the board of the Curtis Bay Towing Company, died yesterday at a nursing home after an illness of a year.
Funeral services for Captain Jefferson, who was 93 and lived in the Village of Cross Keys, will be held at 3 P.M. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church, North Charles street and Belvedere avenue.
He served as president of the boat towing firm from 1935 until 1966, when he was made chairman of the board. He was made chairman emeritus in 1972.
Captain Jefferson had started with Curtis Bay Towing in 1929, working for a year with a subsidiary that operated oil tankers before being named a vice president and being transferred to Philadelphia a year later.
He had been honored a number of times by Baltimore organizations for his work with the port, most recently being named port man of the year in 1975 by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
He was also made an honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire and Knight First Class of the order of the Lion of Finland.
He had served as honorary Finnish consul here for many years until he retired in 1975 and at one point was named administrator of the Baltimore consular corps.
His other involvements include chairmanship of the 1961 Maryland observance of World Trade Week, membership on the Citizens Committe to Save the Constellation and membership of the Harbor Committee of the Baltimore Association of Commerce. He was elected chairman of the board of the Baltimore Maritime Exchange in 1962.
A native of West Hartlepool, England, he was raised on his grandfather's farm at Robin Hoods Bay, England. Both communities are in the North of England near the Scottish border, and Captain Jeff, as he was known, retained some hint of a burr in his speech.
He was a graduate of Bernard Castle and at the age of 17 became an apprentice seaman. Later, he obtained master's license for both sailing and steam vessels and said aboard both British and American ships.
A year later, he became marine superintendent of the Nafra Company, a New York stevedoring firm. After 10 years there, he went to New Orleans and worked for an oil tanker firm before coming to Baltimore.
He is survived by his wife, the former Lois LePage, three daughters, Mrs. Grace Kirk, of Sherman, Conn., and Elsie Jefferson and Mrs. Margaret Coker, both of Baltimore, and six grandchildren.
