- Services for Paul Leonard, who designed and painted outdoor advertising signs, were being today at the Ruck funeral establishment, 5305 Harford road. Mr. Leonard, who was 72, died Friday at Mercy Hospital. He lived at 1045 Hillen street.
In 1925 he attended the Maryland Institue and later worked for the General Outdoor Advertising Company. His own firm, the Leonard Sign Company, opened in 1935, and employed 20 workers during its most successful years. Mr. Leonard contracted to do the signs for the Gunther Beer Company, Free State Brewery and Western Maryland Dairy, among others.
All the advertisements at the Oriole baseball park at Twenty-ninth street and Greenmont avenue were designed by him and constructed by workmen in his company. In his spare time Mr. Leonard painted landscapes and seascapes in oils, and sketched in charcoal. He was a member of the Charcoal Club and won a prize for works exhibited there.
During 1936 Mr. Leonard, who was a Democrat, painted policial placards for Alf Landon, Republican presidental nominee. He was a member of the Elk's Club and Aisquith Pleasure Club.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maria Leonard, of Orlando, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Ilia J. Fehrer, of Snow Hill, Md., and Mrs. Ionthe A. Jefferson, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Eva Anderson, of Joppa, Md., and 11 grandchildren.

- Pocomoke City - Marie J. Leonard, 91, died Wednesday, May 29, 1996, at Salisbury Center: Genesis Elder Care.
Leonard was born Marie Julie Vodackova in Boscovice, Moravia, in 1905. She came to this country in 1921. Her husband, Paul Leonard of Balitmore, died in 1968.
She attended the Maryland Institue of Art for two years in the early 1920s and graduated from the Maryland Institue of Architecture, Market Place School in 1947. She worked for the Glenn L. Martin Co. in Baltimore from 1944 to 1947; Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, Md. from 1947 to 1949; and again for the Martin Co. in 1949, moving to Orlando, Fla. in 1953, where she worked in its new facility, Martin Marietta Corp. She retired in 1971 as a senior engineer, having worked on numerous air and space projects.
Leonard was a member of the Appalachian Trail Club and the National Gem and Mineral Society. She was a charter member of the Orlando Museum and Planetarium, and a devoted member of the American Society For The Preservation of Cruelty To Animals and numerous animal activist organizations.
Her survivors include a sister, Olga Thomas of Orlando, Fla.; two daughters, Ilia J. Fehrer of Snow Hill and Ionthe L. Rhodes of Eastville; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a newphew in California; and many relatives in the Czech Republic.
At her request, her body was donated to the Anatomy Board of Maryland. Private services will be held at a later date.
