Anecdote |
Somerset Co., Maryland [3] |
- Mr. Joe Scott, as he was called, owned a basket factory (Scott Brothers) at Wellington, between Princess Anne and Pocomoke, with his brother, Mr. Billy. They owned forest land near the factory and grew gum trees, the gum of which was used for making baskets. They made strawberry, peach, pea and tomato baskets and strawberry crates. The cleared land near the factory was owned by the Porter family. The basket factory flourished until Joe's health declined and the gum tree forest was depleted. They also had a saw mill and other properties and businesses. Joe left Wellington and moved to Princess Anne and his brother moved to Pocomoke. The little town of Wellington disappeared when the post office and school were closed. On the site of Joe's homestead now sits the Wellington Wildlife Management Area. (William Marshall Scott; Ruth Porter Hall's oral history recorded by the Somerset DAR and printed 11 Oct 1989 in the Somerset Herald)
