Hamden (Conn.) Rush Porter Marshall, one of the foremost authorities on shade trees in the United States, died yesterday at the age of 81. Marshall, a native of Philadelphia, served as a pathologist for the Forest Pathology Division of the U.S. Agriculture Department from 1914 to 1946. From 1947 to 1960 he was director of the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory in Stamford, Conn. He is survived by his widow Lillian and a daughter, Maryan L. Marshall of Lynchburg, Va.
