Anecdote |
1951 |
Princess Anne, Somerset Co., Maryland [8] |
- From Henry M. Lankford's obituary: Dr. Lankford was known as one of Princess Anne's most colorful residents.
At one time when he was honorary deputy sheriff, he pearl-handled pistols. He also wore a 10-gallon hat that had almost become a part of his personality in recent years.
He was known by all here as Dr. Harry. Every day he strolled to the postoffice and along the main street, stopping to chat with one and all. He was always ready to pass on a joke from his interminable supply or listen to a new one.
Around the railroad his was a familiar face. He was a physician for the Pennsylvania Railroad. As a hobby and usually and in his professional capacity, Dr. Harry used to meet nearly all the trains. Most of the engineers and firemen and other train crewmen he knew by first names as the result of his friendly chats. (The Daily Times, Salisbury, MD Mon. 8 Oct 1951)

Obituary |
1951 |
Princess Anne, Somerset Co., Maryland |
- Funeral services for Dr. Henry Marshall Lankford were held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. from the Manokin Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Wallace W. Williams; internment was in the Manokin cemetery. Dr. Lankford died at 6:15 p.m. Sunday at his home, Beckford, on the Manokin River. He had suffered an attack early that morning and had apparently recovered. He had asked for the radio to listen to the World Series baseball game as he had a great interest in sports events. The second attack twelve hours later, caused his immediate death. Dr. Lankford was beloved by all who knew him. He displayed a keen sense of humor and had a joke for ever occasion. While he retired his practice as a physician here in 1940 because of his health, he was Deputy Medical Examiner for the County at the time of his death. In this capacity he had been made an honorary sheriff of the county and as such he sported two small pearl-handled revolvers and a large sheriff star on his belt and wore a large "cattleman's or sheriff's " hat as a part of his customary garb. The two guns earned for him the title of "Two-Gun Harry" and were a part of his large collection of pistols, rifles and short guns. Another of his hobbies was railroading and this also was reflected in his official capacity as physician to the Pennsylvania Railroad. He met nearly all the trains and knew nearly all the train crews that made the runs on the Delmarva Division. Often he would meet the train in Salisbury and ride down to Princess Anne chatting with the crewmen. Dr. Harry began his practice here after his graduation from Johns Hopkins University Medical School, Baltimore in 1905. He also was a graduate of Western Maryland College and Media, PA Academy. For a time he was superintendent of a sanitarium in Levenworth, Kansas, but later returned to Princess Anne to resume practice. For many years, he and his first wife, Dr. Catherine Fitzsimmons Lankford, practiced together. She died in 1937 and he retired three years later because of ill health. For 65 years he had lived in Beckford, the 180 year old estate of his parents the late H. Filmore and Ida Marshall Lankford. His father was a prominent local attorney and one time clerk of the circuit court here. Dr. Lankford was a charter member of the Princess Anne Rotary club and seldom missed a meeting of the organization. On Tuesday his chair was turned back and a short memorial was held by the members. His two favorite songs, The Quilting Party and "Old Black Joe" were sung in his memory but members felt the renderation seemed flat without his resounding bass. Singing was another of his hobbies and for years he was a member of the Manokin Church choir. He was a charter member of the American Legion and was a past commander of the Oliver T. Beauchamp Post No. 94. He was a past member of the masonic order. He left his wife, Mrs. Margurite Harms Lankford and two children by his first marriage. They are Mrs. Catherine Lankford Carver, a Salisbury business woman and Henry F. Lankford, Snow Hill attorney.
