  	After his parents died, Rush sold a cow to get money to go to Philadelphia, to live with his uncle, F. Wesley Porter and his wife, Ella, in a section of the city called Germantown. He first took a job at a paint shop and was later employed by John Butler at his drug store on the northwest corner of Manheim Street and Germantown Avenue.

  	Rush P. Marshall, age 19, was a boarder at the rooming house of Thos. K. Dance on Germantown Avenue. He and his parents were born in Maryland and his occupation is shown as drugist.

  	After a two-year wait to attain the required age, Rush obtained his Ph.G degree from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He opened his own drugstore at 16th and Race Streets in 1886.

  	In December of 1895, due to tuberculosis, Rush moved the family near his sister, Jennie Whittington, in Monrovia, California. In 1898, he was a patient at the San Gabriel Sanitarium for Pulmonary Diseases. A twenty-two page, hand-written letter from Jane Frances Hayward (Rush's sister-in-law), tells much of the life and times of the Whittington and Marshall families while Rush and his family were in Philadelphia and their move to California. Two months before his death, Rush wrote a letter on San Gabriel Sanitarium stationery and mailed in a company envelope of the The Marshall Field Company in North Ontario, CA. In this letter, Rush wrote: "I wish I'd never met a Field." (note: unable to find any connection to Marshall Field Co. by family or employment.) After his death, Mame moved the young family back to Philadelphia. Jane Francis Hayward's letter also mentioned that Rush had been a member of the Order of Plumed Knights and rode with the Mendicis, a bicycle club composed of doctors and pharmacists. The above letter was written to C. Hayward Marshall, Sr. in 1948. Jane Frances Hayward was known as "Aunt Fannie" and she accompanied her sister to California to help care for the small children.)
