  	On the complaint of Rachel Northam, her husband John was bound to keep the peace, but in January 1738/39, he was released from his bond because no one appeared to protest. During the next ten months Rachel probably noticed that she was seeing less of her husband; he was unlawfully cohabiting with Sarah Benston for least part of that time. While her husband's philandering may have been part of the picture, it was not the whole story. The following January Rachel came to court and petitioned that "she had for a long time by past been used with so much Cruelty by her Husband that she could not with Safety of Life longer cohabit with him." He refused to support her even though she had brought several slaves and a considerable estate to their marriage. Now, because of infirmity, age and her husband's abuse, she claimed she was unable to work for her living. Penniless, Rachel was declared a pauper and assigned Geo. Douglas as her attorney. Northam went on to other things, including obtaining a discharge from the bond keeping him from Sarah Benston, but poor Rachel and her petition simply faded away.
