Capt. John Collett1
M, b. circa 1740
Birth* | circa 1740 | Capt. John Collett was born circa 1740.1 |
Biography* | | John Collett of Philadelphia was always loyal. In 1773 when Dr. Kersley was tarred and feathered at Philadelphia because he expressed abhorrence openly, mob planned to tar and feather him. Learned of their plans and left for Md; went from there to Accomack, Va. where he opened a thriving store. In 1775 refused rebel offers to give him command of a Regt; instead devised with Capt. Scarborough a plan to take loyalists to Norfolk, having disposed of all his store goods on credit. They engaged a vessel to travel the 37 miles to Norfolk and set out on a dark night to avoid discovery; nevertheless their plans were found out, and 200 armed horsemen pursued them. Mrs. Scarborough was threatened by rebels that house would be burned if husband did not return so he gave up his escape plan, but claimant was able to reach Norfolk with 15 companions; lost his papers on the way. Wounded at Battle of Great Bridge Dec. 1775; soon after, while at head of party gathering provisions overtaken by snowstorm; vessel driven ashore at Hampton during night and lost. The next day he was discovered by rebels, chained between two Negroes, and taken to Williamsburg, there confined 13 weeks before being condemned to lead mines for life. Made escape in Richmond; after suffering much hardship in woods for want of food and clothing, reached British fleet off Norfolk. Raised 200 men and went to N.Y. where he raised a complete Co. which he commanded until Jan. 1782; the resigned, to raise two troops of Cavalry with 30 horses. Rev. John H.S. Ewell1
M, b. 23 June 1865, d. 22 March 1908
Birth* | 23 June 1865 | Rev. John H.S. Ewell was born on 23 June 1865 at Caroline Co, MD.1 |
Death* | 22 March 1908 | He died on 22 March 1908 at Blue Ridge Summit, Franklin Co, PA, at age 42. The funeral services over the remains of Rev. John H. S. Ewell, were held in Mt. Pleasant Church, Crisfield, Wednesday morning last, conducted by Revs. Louis Randall, Hodge, Reynolds of Crisfield and Rev. Gibson of Trinity Church, Baltimore. John H. S. Ewell, was born at Willis, Caroline County, Maryland and was 42 years of age. He was educated at the public schools of that and adjoining counties and at the Western Maryland College, at Westminister Md. In 1889 he became a member of the Maryland General M. P. Conference, and his first charge was at Mariners Church, in this city, where he preached for six years. His efforts while at that church, were largely instrumental in the establishing of the large church at Mariners. During the years that followed Rev. Ewell filled some of the most important charges in the Maryland Conference, and proved one of the most enterprising, strongest and successful ministers of the conference. Seven years ago he was appointed to the Methodist Protestant Church at Alexandria, Va., where he served for six years. Two years ago, while at Alexandria, he contracted typhoid fever, and for several weeks, was the inmate of a Baltimore Hospital in a critical condition. After partially recovering from the fever, he again filled his pulpit, though in a failing state of health, and at the last session of his conference was appointed to Harpers Ferry. Rev. Ewell filled this charge for a few weeks, but his physicians advised that he take a few months vacation, and leaving his new charge he went to Blue Ridge Summit, where he resided until his death. During the summer of 1907 Rev. Ewell's health seemed to improve to a slight extent, but with the closing of the fall, he grew worse, and two weeks ago again returned to the Hospital for an operation. It was then found that his lungs and stomach were affected, and no hopes were entertained for his recovery. He passed away at Blue Ridge Summit late last Sunday evening. Rev. Ewell, since early in life had been a member of Chesapeake Lodge No. 147 A. F. & A. M. of Crisfield, and this lodge had charge of the funeral services. The active pallbearers were: Messrs. T. Howard Tawes, Harold L. Loreman, Carroll Crockett, Clarence Sterling, Wm. E. Daugherty and Edward McGrath. He was buried in the family lot in the Crisfield Cemetery. Rev. Ewell was married and leaves a widow and two children, besides his mother, and two brothers, Messrs. George R. Ewell, of Baltimore and A. Webster Ewell, of Crisfield. In the death of Rev. Ewell, the Maryland Conference loses one of its most promising young ministers, his acquaintances a devoted faithful friend, and his stiate an honorable, brilliant, christian gentleman. Miles & Stacia Childers checked the original in the Accomack County Clerks' Office and found Mrs. Turman made an transposition error. The original shows that on 27 Dec 1841 David Mears, John Y. Fitchett, Augustus J. Johnson, Samuel C. Johnson or any three of them were named to appraise the estate of Isaac Lewis dec'd and make return to this court. This was evidently the estate of Isaac Lewis of Chincoteague, wife Vesta.8 |
