Land bought* | 1929 | She bought land in 1929 at tract N49H (Elkington), Savage Neck, Northampton Co, VA. In 1927 Judge Henry L. Upshur sold the house and the north part of the land with the waterfront to Mr. & Mrs. W.C. Scott, with whom he continued to live until 2 year later, when they resold to Mrs. Evelyn V. Willing of Cherrystone and of Chestnut Hill, PA. Title descended to her daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Willing-Bromley, who in 1946 sold to Quinton G. Nottingham. Mrs. Willing was a Savage descendant so this part of the tract once more came back into the original family. She redecorated the interior and furnishe the house with a rare collection of antiques, besides doing considerable outside planting. She did not occupy it herself, but used it as a guest house, loaned it the Woman's Club for luncheons, etc., and as she kept a caretaker there, it always was open to interested visitors. During the Willing ownership two copies of paintings by Sully were on the walls: in the parlor, one of John Teackle of Kegotank (tract A121K) and in the library, another of his daughter, Hester Maria Fisher Teackle. It is local tradition that Thomas L. Savage started building the house for a daughter, but when she died he lost interest and sold to Stratton. An insurance policy of 1801 shows the house just about as it is today (1951).6 |
Land bought | 1939 | She bought land in 1939 at tract N88A (Wellington), north of Franktown, Northampton Co, VA. A trustee for the Robinsons sold this tract to Mrs. Evelyn V. Willing and 3 years later trustees for her estate sold to G.B. and Emily Louise Hurlbut.7 |
