Rulon Sanford Ashby1
M, b. 9 October 1904, d. 2 January 1997
Birth* | 9 October 1904 | Rulon Sanford Ashby was born on 9 October 1904 at Belle Haven, Accomack Co, VA. Rulon was born at his parents home who at the time were living with Willard's parents, John and Ida. The house was on the Belle Haven Road in Belle Haven, Va. on the Eastern Shore. Rulon was the oldest of four children.2 |
Anecdote* | | He grew up on a 648 acre farm on the Occohannock Creek. The farm, Grapeland, is on the Silver Beach road in Wardtown, near Exmore. It was owned by Dr. James Doughty who received a percentage of the profits from the crops. About 300 acres were farmed, there was an orchard of apple and pear trees, several acres of woods and several fenced-in acres around the house. In the fenced area, horses and sheep grazed and there was a chicken house, pig pen, barn, corn crib, water tower, boat-house, outhouse and houses in which field hands lived. At a young age, Rulon's parents were asked to stop bringing him to Sunday school because he asked too many questions. Thereafter, he was left home to look after the younger brother and sister while his parents attended church. He wasn't interest in farming. His father said that he could often be found asleep under a tree. He was a good mechanic. Before he arrived at the high school, typewriters used for the typing class, were repaired by a man who came down from Maryland. Rulon took over the job. Growing up, the highest paid man in town was an auto mechanic so he wanted to be a mechanic and he worked as a mechanic while in high school. He was encouraged to go to college. A man told him that he had visited several colleges and was very impressed with the University of Delaware so Rulon enrolled there in 1922 to study electrical engineering. He joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He traveled to and from school on a motorcycle. He hadn't had algebra in high school so he had to teach himself. Finances were always a problem. He worked in the dining hall and for a local farmer picking apples. Eventually he ran out of money and was about to drop out when a woman member of the DuPont family gave him a loan which carried him through. He boxed and claimed to have never lost a fight. He told the story of friends getting him to fight a large man who was visiting the college because he had a date with a woman at the woman's college. They felt sure that the big guy could beat Rulon. Rulon said that he kept out of reach of the man and let him come at him. Each time he advanced, Rulon hit him in the face. The man got a bloody nose and he got blood on his shirt. The man quit and said, "I have a date and look at me." After graduation, his first job was with The American Can Company in New Jersey. He moved into the YWCA in Newark. After being at American Can a short while, he felt he could improve on the can making machine and sketched a design. He showed it to his boss and was told that they had a machine like that operating on another floor. He left after five months and went to work for the NY Bell Telephone Company, which at that time included NJ. He was a good trouble-shooter and he was sent to fix central offices that had been out of service for some time and others had not been able to fix. He would get them working quickly. He found that the speed with which he got offices repaired caused animosity because it embarrassed those who hadn't been able to do the repairs. When the depression occurred, he moved from engineering to central office management. He held several management jobs, finally being in charge of all buildings, supplies and motor vehicles for NJ Bell. Some years after graduation, he was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the honorary engineering fraternity, for being an outstanding engineering alumni. During WWII, he taught radio to the Army Radio Corp. Being a good mechanic, he repaired radios for friends, rebuilt the engine of his 1937 Packard, repaired his TVs, and almost anything else needing repair. After he moved to Barnegat Bay he helped neighbors with their boat engines. He married Cacilda Anna (Ann) Dorian December 20, 1930 in a minister's house in Elkton, MD. The minister was a friend of Rulon's. Dr. Jimmy Marvel, Rulon's college room- mate, and his wife stood up for them at the wedding. After the wedding, they went to visit Rulon's parents. It was snowing. They were married 66 years. He loved the water and boating. After retiring, he taught several sailing courses for the Power Squadron organization. Ann said that when they married, he had trouble deciding whether he wanted her or a new boat. Their first home was an apartment in a house in East Orange. Their son, Charles, was born February 19, 1934. In 1937, they rented Ann's sister, Lillian's house in East Orange. September 8, 1937 Richard was born. In 1941, they bought a house in Verona, NJ. Virginia was born July 6, 1941. They later lived in Haddonfield, Orange, Short Hills, Chatham and Ocean Beach, NJ. In 1988, they made their last move to their son Charles' farm in Eldersburg, MD.2 |

Ann Cacilda Cecelia Dorian1
F, b. 8 February 1908, d. 8 March 2002
Birth* | 8 February 1908 | Ann Cacilda Cecelia Dorian was born on 8 February 1908 at Brooklyn, New York City, NY.1 |
Anecdote* | circa 1910 | She was the seventh of eight children: three boys and five girls. Her father died before she was three. After his death, the family moved to Easton, PA where her Mother had a millinery shop and ran a boarding house. Later they moved to East Orange, NJ where her mother made her living buying and selling houses. When Ann was in kindergarten, the teacher spanked her and she wouldn't go back to school. Her mother's brother, George Duffy, and his wife, took her to live with them in Washington, D. C. George took Ann to the beauty parlor and had a tailor make four outfits for her. George was a caterer and he catered for the White House. When he catered the White House, he took Ann. After seven years with her uncle, she went to live with her mother's ill friend and her husband in Long Branch, N.J. Ann took care of the woman and went to school. They lived near the Shrewsbury River where Ann would crab. Next, Ann went back to live with her mother, over time, living in several houses in East Orange. Her mother would get the family up to see the sun rise. Saturday nights the boys shined all the shoes and lined them up ready to wear to church Sunday morning. Sunday night all gathered around the piano in the music room and sang. A neighbor family owned a business in NY City. Their chauffeur, Chester, took the man to New York every day. When Ann got a job at the N.J. Bell Telephone Co. in Newark, he gave her a ride since they drove by her office. Chester would stop in front of the Telephone Company building and open the car door for Ann. The president of N.J. Bell, Chester Barnard, also was dropped off in front of the building about the same time. A telephone company friend got her a date with Rulon Ashby. One time Rulon visited Ann, a neighbor saw Rulon and later said "If he makes a second date, he will marry you." They married December 20, 1930 in a minister's house in Elkton, MD. The minister was a friend of Rulon's. Dr. Jimmy Marvel, Rulon's college roommate, and his wife stood up for them at the wedding. After the wedding, they visited Rulon's parents. They were married 66 years. When Ann's sister, Lillian, told their mother of the marriage, she had a heart attack and was in bed for two weeks. She wanted a big wedding. Many years afterward, Ann's mother visited Rulon's parents in Virginia. They got along well. Their first home was an apartment in a house in East Orange. While there, Charles was born February 19, 1934. In 1937, they rented Ann's sister's house in East Orange. While there, Richard was born September 8, 1937. In 1941 they bought a house in Verona, NJ. Virginia was born there July 6, 1941. They later lived in Haddonfield, Orange, Short Hills, Chatham, Ocean Beach, NJ. and finally Eldersburg, MD.
