Smith, Jr., John Ben Floyd, Roger Bell, D.W. Foxwell, John T. Ames, F.G. Mapp, Ernest Dunton, M.J. Duer (niece's husband?), E.M. Gladstone, L.S. Gladstone and J.W. Gladstone. He is survived by his widow, two children, Mrs. Louise Tarton (sic), of Baltimore, and Mr. Howard Gladstone, of Hadlock, one sister, Mrs. Willard Ashby, of Wardtown, and four brothers, Messrs. Interment was in Belle Haven Cemetery. Mr. Gladstone's death occurred in St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla. (sic), on Thursday, March 20 after a short illness. He had been spending the winter at his Florida home. A native of Northampton County, Mr. Gladstone was born and reared at "Happy Union", (sic) (the home is often on garden tours as of 2001) the family homestead at Franktown, and was the son of the late James Justice Gladstone and Emily Minson Gladstone. When a young man, he moved to Exmore, where for many years he served, alternately as postmaster at Exmore and rural mail carrier, and was retired some time ago. He was a member of Franktown Methodist Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Bayly Gladstone; one daughter Miss Elizabeth Gladstone, of Exmore; a son Robert T. Gladstone, Jr., of Richmond; one grandson, Robert T. Gladstone III; a sister, Mrs. Willard Ashby, of Exmore; and two brothers, Dr. C.F. Gladstone, Tangier, and Claude Gladstone, Painter. The pallbearers were, active, Clarence Ward (nephew), John Ward (nephew), Vivian Bayly, Lloyd Bayly, Harvey Gilden, Dr. Jos. Gladstone (nephew), honorary, M.J. Duer (niece's husband), Len Robbins, Morris Young, C.M. She was buried in the family plot in Belle Haven Cemetery. As Bettie Young, the second daughter of the late Severn James Young and Mary Lavinia Joynes, of Happy Union Farm, Mrs. Gladstone was born in Accomack County, Sept 26, 1870. She is survived by a son Severn Benjamin Doughty (by her 1st husband Charles B. Doughty), by daughters Mrs. Mary Gladstone Chandler, wife of Willis Chandler and Mrs. Annie Gladstone Hall, wife of John Hall of Snow Hill (by her 2nd husband Louis Sydney Gladstone). One son Milton Young Gladstone died in infancy. Mrs. Gladstone, who enjoyed the art of the genealogist, was herself descended from one of the old families of Virginia's Eastern Shore. "Ingleside" at Morley's Wharf, built for the Young family in 1802, bears upon its exterior brick walls, the names of many Youngs who had lived beneath the family roof.2 |
