He was shown as Jabez Cheshire and was list the same day as Sophia Marshall and Bratcher Moor. He was charged with tax for himself and only 1 horse, mare, colt or mule. (NOTE: This implied he had no white males above 16 and under 21 living with him which also implied his sons would have been under age 16 at this time as they were not listed separately.)1 |
Census head* | 1800 | Jabez was listed as a head of household in the census of 1800 at Accomack Parish, Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Jabez Chesser a head of household, age 45+ (born before 1755). Listed with him were 2M0-10, 2M10-16, 2M16-26, 1F10-16, 1F16-26 & 1F45+.3 |

The following copies of 3 hand written documents were found in Mrs. Turman's Chesser file at the E.S.P.L. (1) "At a court held for Accomack County October the 28th 1807 it is ordered to be certified to the Register of the Land Office of the State of Virginia that the within named Jabez Chesshire is the representative of the within named John Chesshire dec'd a soldier in the Revolutionary War." Signed: "John Wise, Clerk Acc Court" (2) "The Register of the Land Office of the State of Virginia will please issue a military land warrant to Thomas M Bayly and in his name for what may be owed to John Chesshire dec'd a soldier to the end of the Revolutionary War with Great Britian and this shall be full authority to the Registrar to issue the said warrant, I being the legal representative of the said John Chesshire dec'd as witness my hand and seal this 27 day of Nov. 1807." Signed: "Jabez (his + mark) Chesshire" Witt: "Sebastian Cropper & G.W. Burton" (3) "The Representatives of John Cheshire are entitled to the proportion of land allowed a private in the Continental Line for Seven years & 10 months service to the end of the war, dated January 15th 1808." Below the above statement is written "To Wm. H. Cabele - Received 18 Jany 1808 a warrant for 261 acres as per warrant #5381 in my name assignee of Jabez Chesshire rept of Jno Chesshire." Signed: "Tho M Bayly" (NOTE: Mrs. Turman concluded that Jabez was a brother of Private John Chesshire, while others she was corresponding with believed Jabez to be a son of Private John Chesshire. According to the 1800 & 1810 Accomack County census and the ages of several of his sons shown on census and marriage records, Jabez was probably born circa 1748. If Private John Chessire was his Jabez's father he would have been born circa 1725, which is inconsistent with him being added to Matthew Chessire's personal tax list in 1766, when he probably turned 16, putting his birth circa 1750. It also seems unlikely that a 50 year old man would serve as a Private for 7 years. So it seems certain that Jabez Chessire and Private John Chessire were brothers.)2 |

Death* | before 1820 | He died before 1820 at Accomack Parish, Accomack Co, VA. Jabez Chesser was not listed as a head of household in the 1820 census. His sons William (age 45+), Custis (age 26-45), Eli (age 26-45) were listed as heads of household. A household headed by Nancy Chessire, age 45+ (also had another female age 45+) who may have been his wife as she was the oldest female head of household.3 |

Death* | before 1787 | He died before 1787 at Accomack Co, VA. He was not listed on the 1787 Accomack County Personal Tax List.3 |
Rev War Rep named* | 28 October 1807 | John's representative was named on 28 October 1807 at Accomack Co, VA. According to Turman it was on this date that Accomack County Court certified Jabez Cheshire as the legal heir of John Cheshire who was a private in the Revolutionary War. On 27 Nov 1807 he received a certificate for land which he sold to Thomas M. Bayly of Accomack County. She therefore concluded that Jabez was a brother of John.4 |
