Barbara Crummey (aka Cromwell)1
F, b. 25 September 1904, d. 12 June 1991
Birth* | 25 September 1904 | Barbara Crummey (aka Cromwell) was born on 25 September 1904 at Western Bay, Newfoundland, Canada.1 |
Anecdote* | | Crummey is a variation of Crombie, a Scottish place name from the so-named location in the former county of Aberdeenshire, now in the Grampian region. Other variations include Crumbie, Crummie, Crummay, Crummy, Crumey, Crumy, and the (o's) Crombie, Crommie, etc. Though the spelling is different the sound is the same. Crom(b)ie means crooked. Spelling variations of this surname causes much confusion in research. These changes occured for a variety of reasons, sometimes a different spelling indicated a religious or clan loyalty to a branch or chieftain. Sometimes it was just mis-spelled as sometimes seen between father and son. It is not uncommon for a clansman to be born with one spelling, marry with another, and yet another to appear on his headstone. Most Irish Cromies, Crummys, etc. are of Scottish descent. James Crombie received estates in the barony of Glenarne between 1600 and 1700 when the locale population of Irish Catholics were moved out of the counties of Antrim and Down. John Cromie was prominent amoung the defenders of Derry in 1689. That Cromies may also be Irish Gaels is indicated by the fact the Petty's "census" of 1659 records five families of O'Cromy in the barony of Armagh. A Fiant of 1602 mentions Teig McConnogher O'Cromy, yeoman, of Dromkarra (County Cork). In the previous century O'Crome and O'Croyme occur in counties Meath and Galway and may be earlier forms of the same name. The earliest known Cromey in America was Thomas, who settled in Virginia in 1638. It is hoped that this information will help others in their search for their ancesters with this often mis-spelled surname.2 |

Death* | 13 November 1927 | Maggie Hateney died on 13 November 1927 at Accomack Co, VA, at age 54. Her obituary showed her as Maggie Sample, Colored (By her husband and children.) Maggie Sample, the respected wife of Isaac Sample, passed away Sunday morning at her late home. She had been in feeble health for some time, but was always bright and cheerful. Maggie was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Mears Hateney. She was born and reared in this neighborhood. As a child she was energetic and industrious. At her own request she went to serve quite young at Mrs. Sarah Birds, and stayed there except when she attended school, till the day she was married to Isaac Sample. By this union there were three children, Daisy Cora Bird, Marietta and De Forest Sample. As a girl Maggie was popular. Not only was she thought of by her own color, but she had many white friends who will be sorry to hear of her passing. As long as her health permitted, she never refused to leand a helping hand, and grieved so often because she was not able to go over to the "House" to comfort and help the "one" that was left at the old house where she had spent her child and girlhood days. She was a good wife and mother and will be more than missed by them. She leaves a husband and two children, Daisy Barton and Williard De Forset Sample, two grandchildren, a sister Southy Martin, a brother Thomas Hateney and a host of friends. While we sorrow for her, there is another side. Can you not see, as she went down to the river and stood on the shore there on the other side waiting to welcome her home. Singing "Gathering, gathering, one by one, we'll soon to gathered home." ___ not say, and I will not say, that 'she' is dead, she is just away, and a cherry smile and wave of the hand. She has wandered into an unknown land. And yes - Oh you, who wild'st yearn for the old tim step and the glad return. Think of her as faring on as dear is the love of There as the love of Here. (By Isaac Sample and Children).4,5 |

Anecdote* | 14 July 1939 | The article was titled Capt. H.F. Turner Visits Relatives, subtitle Former Eastern Shoreman Has Spent 54 years in New York (including a picture of him). Capt. and Mrs. Hillary F. Turner, their daughter Miss Beatrice Turner, and their son, Mr. Edwin F. Turner, of Brooklyn, NY, were pleasant visitors at the Enterpise office Tuesday morning, en route to Painter, where they will visit Capt. Turner's sister Mrs. A. U. LeCato, and Mr. and Mrs. R.U. LeCato. Turner is a native of Hawks Nest, now Mappsburg. He left Hawks Nest in 1865(sic) and went to New York, when he was about 16 years of age. He worked as deck hand on tow boats under his brother, Capt. George Leonard Turner. In 1891, when he became 21 years of age, he was given his Master's and Pilot's license, which allowed him to take charge of boats in any waters in the world. He accepted a position as Captain of tow boats. Later he became Captain of the municpal ferries of New York City. After 33 years in this service, he retired on July 1, last. His total service as Captain was more than 48 years and in that time not a passanger was hurt on a boat in his command. Capt. Turner is familiarly known among his friends in New York as "Commondore." Many friends on the Shore will join us in wishing him many happy years with his family to enjoy a well earned rest after a strenuous life as captain of ferry and tow boats.5 |

Anecdote* | 14 July 1939 | The article was titled Capt. H.F. Tuner Visits Relatives, subtitle Former Eastern Shoreman Has Spent 54 years in New York (including a picture of him). Capt. and Mrs. Capt. Turner is familiarly known among his friends in New York as "Commondore." Many friends on the Shore will join us in wishing him many happy years with his family to enjoy a well earned rest after a strenuous life as captain of ferry and tow boats.6 |
