In his will William Gibb named daughter Sally Garrison (£300), son George Gibb (£400), daughter Peggy Johnson (slaves), son Thomas (plantation on Occohannock containing 349 acres), sons John & Joseph (plantation where I live containing 600 acres), Alexander Stran Sr. $1, to son Benjamin (65 acres & slaves & £1,000, to Isaac Smith for the use of grandson Strahan (under 21) £300 (interest only) for his education & then to son Benjamin; 4 sons Thomas, John (under 21), Joseph (under 21), & Benjamin (under 21) the remainder of slaves. To Patty Stockley, Jeremiah Stockley & Tully Beasley £10 each.2 |
Death* | 25 October 1832 | He died on 25 October 1832 at Northampton Co, VA, at age 44. George Thomas Gibb, Sr. died 25 Oct 1832 by accidental drowning (possibly in Chesapeake Bay). No records show recover of body. Between the time that George THomas Gibb, Sr drowned in 1832 and the time of the estate settlement on 2 Dec 1836 (Order Book 39, 1831-1836, Northampton County, Virginia Court Records), there is no record of where the mother and her two sons lived. George Thomas Gibb, Jr was at the estate sale and purchased many items. The estate sale contained many boxes of religious books, books of sermons by Wesley and Benson, many boxes of school books, household effects, corn, etc. Inventory records were found in metal box on top shelf in Northampton County Clerk's Office. This list of items in his estate would confirm the family legend that George Thomas Gibb, Sr was a preacher (Methodist) and a teacher. Family legend also indicated that he spoke five languages. (His personal Bible inscribed with his signature and dated December 24, 1829 is now in possession of Lester Gibb.) According to family legend passed down by Flavius Josephus Gibb, George Thomas Gibb, Jr (older brother) left the Eastern Shore of Virginia and did not return. Research does not show any information until he arrived in Cullman County and St Clair County, Alabama in 1838. According to legend passed down by Flavius Josephus Gibb, he and his mother (Comfort Bull Gibb) moved to Woodland Plantation on the seaside - north of Nassawadox, Northampton County, Va. This plantation was owned by the William Thomas family. It was there that Flavius Josephus Gibb became farm overseer at approximately age 16. Flavius Josephus would have been age 16 in 1836 and would have been old enough to support his mother - supposition... that gave George Thomas Gibb, Jr the freedom to leave his mother and seek his fortune elsewhere. No further records have been found for Comfort Bull Gibb.5 |
