Death* | 8 December 1926 | He died on 8 December 1926 at Tom's Cove, Assateague Island, Accomack Co, VA. The body of M.J. Stapleton, who was drowned in Tom's Cove December 8th, was discovered on a tump of marsh at the mouth of Tump Creek in Cargartha Bay, Saturday, February 12th, by Clarence Dix, of Rue, who with Herbart Parks and Judson White, was on a clamming trip on the sand flats in Gargartha Bay. The three above named had been clamming for some time when Clarence Dix decided to get up on the marsh. When he did so he found the body. He at once called Parks and White and the three decided the best thing to do would be to notify Commonwealth's Attorney Jeff F. Walter. They returned to the mainland at once and called him. Mr. Walter went there immediately and ordered the body taken ashore, and an inquest was held. The body was later removed to the undertaking establishment of John D. Johnson at Parksley and prepared for burial pending advices from relatives. A ring was on the small finger of his left hand and in his pockets was found som change, a pocket knife and 3 foreign coins. The ring was an Ennis High School ring, engraved inside L.S. This was the means of idetification as his face was gone. In his pocket was a notice from the Studebaker Watch Co. Capt. John M. Richardson, of Assateague Coast Guard Station, was communicated with and he gave the address of F.W. Lockington's relatives in Baltimore. Mr. Lockington was drowned at the same time as Mr. Stapleton. From them Mr. Walter obtained the name and addresses of a brother in Corsicanna, Texas and Mr. Stapleton's mother, who resides in Port Arthur Texas. Upon being communicated with they wired for the body to be interred here. The burial took place in Parksley Cemetery, Rev. F.A. Holland conducting the service. Mr. Stapleton and Mr. Lockington were members of the crew of a tug of the Eastern Transportation Company. On account of storm sweeping the coast on December 8th they went into Tom's Cove. That night the hired a colored man employed in Tom's Cove to take them to Chincogeague in a power boat. The night was very stormy and nothing was ever heard from them again. Parts of the boat were found on the beach a week or so later. The bodies of the two other men drowned with Mr. Stapleton have never been recovered.1 |

William Arthur Kelly Sr.1
M, b. 2 October 1835, d. 7 September 1920
Birth* | 2 October 1835 | William Arthur Kelly Sr. was born on 2 October 1835. William Arthur Kelly's DOB - The 1900 census says Oct 1835 with every census from 1840 to 1920 supporting it (always ending in 4 except 45 in 1880). The death certificate says October 2 1845 (sic - the informant apparently forgot to borrow while subtracting 85 years from the 1920 death date).2 |
Census w/mother* | 1850 | William was listed with his mother in the census of 1850 at Ward 16, Baltimore, MD. Margaret A. Kelly, a head of household, age 30 had listed with her: William A. Kelly, age 14; Edward J. Kelly, age 12; and Inidana Kelly, age 5, all born in Virginia.3 |

Anecdote* | 28 September 2016 | On 28 Sep 2016 Bill Kelly ([email protected]) reported that he and his brother Peter Kelly, working with their father William Kelly (1925-2016)'s DNA, got a yDNA match with Charles Stewart Kelly, an Accomack Co, VA, Kelly, born in 1950. Their last common ancestor was Timothy Kelly (1712-1782) which proved that Arthur of Isaiah of Timothy was William Arthur Kelly Sr. (1835-1920)'s biological father, which had been in question. Besides confirming Bill, Peter and Charles' pedigrees, this and the fact that earlier yDNA results showed Elmer Kelly, an Accomack Co, VA, Kelly born 1944, an 8th generation male line descendant of Edmond Kelly (1702-1762) and Eddie Kelly, an Accomack Co, VA, Kelly, born 1950, a 9th generation male line descendant of John Kelly (1690-1763) (Edmond & John being sons of the first John Kelly (1660-1724) of Accomack Co, VA) match each other but they do not match Bill, Peter & Charles proves that Timothy Kelly was not a biological grandson of the first John Kelly. The likeliest case being that Timothy's father Thomas Kelly (1685-1727) was not a biological son of the first John Kelly. Additional support for this is Thomas' relatively shabby treatment in John Kelly's will. Thomas was the first born and possibly a son of John Kelly's wife Sarah Bell before she married John Kelly. |

Death* | before 18 August 1866 | William T. Kelly died before 18 August 1866 at Northampton Co, VA. He was evidently dec'd before his father Obediah Kelly Sr. died, as Obediah Sr. had been named guardian to William's children. This was brought out in a chancery suit where Catharine Kelly petitioned that she had two children Edward Kelly and Ellen Kelly who were infants; that it appears from the guardian account of Edward Kelly herewith filed, he has due him from his acting guardian Obed Kelly the sum of $46.56 and it appears from the guardian account of Ellen Kelly herewith filed, that she had due her from the acting guardian Obed Kelly the sum of #46.37. She represents that she has for several years past been boarding and supporting the said children and has not received any compensation, and continues to do so, that she is a poor widow woman not worth $500 in the world and is unable to maintain them. She therefore petitions that the said Obed Kelly, administrator of the estate of Obed Kelly dec'd and acting guardian of the said infant children, be authorized and instructed to pay your petitioner the said sums of money to be applied to the support and maintenance of the said infant children. An entry dated 12 Nov 1870 on the guardian accounts presented by Catharine Kelly of both Edward & Ellen Kelly showing Obed Kelly acting guardian showed both Edward and Ellen Kelly received $72.36 as their distributive share of the divident of the estate of Obed Kelly dec'd. (NOTE: This would have been their equal shares of their dec'd father William's inheritance from his father Obed Kelly' estate.)2 |
