Biography* | 1795 | George Bell, son of Joab and Kiziah, grew up on the family farm near Marionville. His childhood ended abruptly at the age of 16 when he enlisted as a private serving John Blair's Company with the 9th Regiment of the Continental Army. U.S. Archive records show he received 6 2/3 dollars per month pay in November and December of 1776. In April 1776 he was promoted to corporal. He was captured by the British during the Battle of Germantown, PA on October 4, 1777 when General Howe turned back the attack of General Washington. He was imprisoned in an old stone Lutheran Church in Germantown on what is now known as Germantown Avenue. There is a tablet in the church yard listing his name among those who were imprisoned there. George Bell was married twice, first on December 25, 1795 to Susan Bell (a second cousin) who died sometime between 1802 and 1807. They had two sons and a daughter. His second marriage was to Elizabeth (Betsy) Scott and they had one daughter and six sons. One son, Agrippa Nelson Bell (1820-1913) served as a surgeon during the Mexican War(1846-1848). He was stationed on several ships and bases while treating patients for yellow fever. After the war he moved to Brooklyn , NY where he served as New York's Sanitarian. He published widely and became a national recognized physician in the field of sanitation and public health. Elizabeth Ireland's grandparents told her that George Bell was "rather short and stout". His son, George (IV), used to accuse his father of building the doorways in his house so low that he was "continually bumping his head against the tops of the doors in the old kitchen and the entry." This house, which burned in 1928, stood on the same site as the Margaret Wood house on the Marionville-Weirwood road. Both George (K), George (IV) and their wives were buried in a family cemetery there, and in 1955 were moved to Red Bank Cemetery.5 |

Chancery suit* | 27 December 1820 | He was named in a chancery suit on 27 December 1820 at Accomack Co, VA. The bill of complaint of Colemore Bird & Hetty his wife, formerly Hetty Taylor, state that Abednigo Taylor, late of this county, owned in his own right negroes slaves. In the fall of 1811 he went to the West Indies in the Schooner ______ commanded by Captain Crippen Taylor Jr of this county and owned by Crippen & Thorowgood Taylor, merchants of the county. That your orator & oratrix have understood and believe that it was expected that the said vessel would return to this county about Christmas in the same year 1811. That the said schooner arrived safely in the West Indies and after transacting their business about the 3 day of December 1811 bounty to the country, having on board the said Abednigo Taylor and the rest of the crew. After they had been at sea about twenty days and probably near the American Coast, a sever gale of wind came on and a number of vessels were lost. The said schooner was spotted by another vessel the day before the gale of wind came on, bound direct to this county and being only about 100 miles from Cape Henry the said schooner and her crew have not been heard from by her owners, or the friends of any persons on board and no doubt but that she and her whole crew were lost in said gale of wind. They further show that at the time of the death of said Abednigo Taylor, he left no will, nor did he leave any widow or children, but left his father Teackle Taylor living. They have been informed that by the laws of this Commonwealth that on the death of Abednigo Taylor his father was entitled to the aforesaid slaves and took possession thereof and held them until his death. He died intestate in January 1813 leaving four children: your orator Hetty, and James B. Taylor, Henry Taylor and Samuel Taylor. They are advised that the aforesaid slaves, as well as the other estate of the said Teackle Taylor, dec'd, are due to them. They further show that since the death of Teackle Taylor the aforesaid James B. Taylor and Henry Taylor have taken possession of said slaves and have all of them in their possession except two, one of whom is now in the possession of Michael Robins and another in the possession of Thorowgood Taylor, both of who alleged that they purchased them from the said James B. Taylor and Henry Taylor. Your orator & oratrix presume that such a purchase cannot affect the rights of you oratrix, being at the time of her marriage with your orator which took place in 1820, under that age of 21 and still being under that age. The orator states that since his marriage to your oratrix, he has frequently applied to James B. Taylor, Henry Taylor, Samuel Taylor and Thorowgood Taylor and Michael Robins and furthermore that the said Michael & Thorowgood should surrender up the slaves purchased by them and the said James B. Taylor & Henry Taylor would consent that all the slaves belonging to Abedingo Taylor should be equally divided in an amicable way without the expense of a law suit among your orator (in right of your oratrix) and James B., Henry & Samuel Taylor. But since they did not comply your orator & oratrix have brought suit. On 1 Sep 1820 James B. Taylor, Henry Taylor, Samuel Taylor, Thorowgood Taylor and Michael Robins were summoned to appear in court on 27 Sep 1820 to answer the above bill in Chancery exhibited against they by Colemore Bird and Hetty his wife. (NOTE: The suit also outlined that if the defendants did not prove otherwise, commissioners would determine the value of all the slaves which would be divided equally by commissioners between the late Abednigo Taylor's four sibling named in the suit.)5 |
