Berkeley, Governor of Virginia: Phillip had married Jone when she was a widow with a "good, reasonable estate left by her former husband of Watts Island in the aforesaid county by name Walter Tayler." In his lifetime, Phillip Ocahone completely wasted and consumed the estate and ran himself far into debt, to the utter ruin of Jone and her poor children. "Phillip, for his felonious and rebellious actions, having justly suffered death", Jone complained that she was being unjustly prosecuted and sued by the creditors of Phillip. Jone implored the governor to grant clemency and command all persons to desist from suing her for any debts contracted by Phillip Occahone, her late husband. The above petition was granted; the Governor forbade all persons from suing Jone Ocahone for any debt contracted in the lifetime of Phillip Ocahone. Signed 11 January 1676/77, Wm. Berkeley. In addition, at the signing of the above, the Governor declared that Jone Ocahone should enjoy the estate in her possession. Testified and signed by Daniel Jenifer. Recorded 14 March 1676/77, by Jno. Washbourne.2 |
