Anecdote* | | Family information provided by Virginia 'Ginny' Custis Winslett reveals that evidently Margaret tried to cover up the fact that she was illegitimate with the following story that has been passed down by family members over several generations. "She was born at Highwood, VA (later information mentioned Drummondtown), that her mother was Margaret Custis who she was named after (thus she could never mentioned that her birth mother was Diadamia Russell) and her father was William Russell (actually William Slocomb) and her grandfather was Samuel Russell who had a pension for serving in the Continental Army during the Rev. War." After all these years and research by Stratton Nottingham, Mark Lewis and Ginny Winslett we now know the only actual truth to her story was that her grandfather Samuel Russell was from Virginia and had a pension for serving in the Rev. War. There is a possibility that there could be another Samuel Russell from somewhere else in Virginia who served in the Rev. War who had a proven granddaughter named Margaret. But Accomack County is the logical choice since it had both Russell and Custis families and it is assumed that is why the Margaret's family contacted Stratton Nottingham in the 1920s and Mark Lewis in the 1950s as they both worked in Accomack County.1 |
