He fought at the Battle of Bannockburn 24 June 1314, where he was taken prisoner. In 1317 his brother and proctor, Roger Mautravers, presented to the church of Lytchett Mautravers, Dorset on his behalf. In 1320 he was goiing to Gascony on the king's service. He fought for Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, at the Battle of Boroughbridge 16 March 1321/2. His lands were subsequently seized and he escaped overseas. His wife Milicent was living in 1322. He returned with Queen Isabel and Roger de Mortimer in Sept. 1326, and soon rose to high favor. He presented to the church of Langton Matravers, Dorset in 1326 and 1361. In April 1327 he and his brother-in-law Thomas de Berkeley, received charge of the deposed king, Edward II, and took him to Berkeley Castle, where, it is said, the king was murdered. He was summonded to Parliament 25 Jan 1329/30 and 3 Oct 1330, by writs directed Johanni de Mautravers juniori, whereby he is held to have become Lord Mautravers. In 1330 King Edward III granted him the honor of Elston (in Orcheston St. George), Wiltshire, formerly held by John Giffard, 2nd Lord Giffard. After the fall of Mortimer from power in Oct 1330, he was condemned in the Parliament which met 26 Nov 1330, and was sentenced to hanging and beheading, and his lands and offices were forfietied. He escaped to Germany, where he lived in obscurity for several years. He married again, etc.1 |
