Death* | 5 August 1920 | Mary Elizabeth Turner died on 5 August 1920 at Cape Charles, Northampton Co, VA, at age 62. Mrs. John T. Wilkins Jr. dies at home in Cape Charles, Yields After Lengthy, Hopeless Fight to Bright's Disease. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Wilkins, wife of Dr. John T. Wilkins Jr., died Thursday morning, August 5th, at her home in Cape Charles, Va, of Brights disease, a malady of which she had suffered several years. The failing preceptibly for some time, she was not considered critically ill till but a few days before she died. Mrs. Wilkins was a native of Northampton, born at "Merton," one of the county's distinguished plantations near Franktown, 62 years ago, her parents being the late Joshua R. and Elizabeth A. Turner. On March 28th 1877, she married Dr. Wilkins and of this union there were born to them 6 children, the late Mrs. William Lee Dalby; Maxwell and Turner, who died one during infancy and the other when a good sized boy; Hon. John T. Wilkins III; Mary Elizabeth, widow of the late Dr. William L. Dalby, and Mrs. Lynn W. Stevenson. The late George Teagle Turner, and William T. Jacob were her half brothers and Mrs. Sallie A. Messick, a half sister; she leaves also 3 grandchildren, 2 of Hon. and Mrs. John T. Wilkins III, and on of Mr. & Mrs. L.W. Stevenson. The funeral was conducted 6 Aug at Hungar's Church by Reverends J.R. McAllister and E.W. Cowling, rectors of Emmanuel and Hungar's respectively; inerment was made in the church yard. Dr. and Mrs. Wilkins removed from their home, "Vaucluse," in Church Neck, to Cape Charles, about 14 years ago and forthwith intrenched themselves in the affections of our people, their conquest of popular favor thus being completed, for they were already beloved throughout the County by everyone who knew them. The passing of this splendid woman quickens sorrow of the deepest kind in the hearts of all our people; her departure marks the passing of a type in womanhood that it is feared is not easily replenished. Those acting as pall bearers were: Dr. C.L. Nottingham, Dr. G.W. Holland, John H. Roberts Sr., W.H. Wilkins, M. Herman Belote, H.H. Wilkins, R.S. Trower Sr., Lucius S. Jacob, L.W.
