In obedience to a decree of the court of Northampton County to us directed bearing the date the 1st December 1801 between Peggy, John, & Mary Jaocb, Ptfs and Sally, Nancy, Teackle & Arthur Jacob, Defts. In Chancery, we the subscribers have proceeded to sell and divide the slaves in said decree mentioned equally between Ptfs & Defts, as per the annexed statement. viz. James was sold to Edward Joynes for £87 and Major was sold to Edward Joynes for £91.10. aand have paid each of the parties £25.10 being the heirs part of the slaves. Given under our hands 31 Jan 1801: Will. Satchell & Charles F. Satchell. (NOTE: The will of John Joynes Sr. recorded at Will Bk 27, p. 178, N'hamp Co, left to daughter Margaret one Negro boy named James. It is reasonable to assume that the slave named James, sold to Edward Joynes was the same one left to Margaret (Peggy) by the will of her father in 1784. It is also very likely that the purchaser of the two salves was the Edward, brother of Margaret, named in the will of John Joynes Sr.)3 |

Land inherited* | 10 February 1798 | Dennis Hickman inherited land on 10 February 1798 at tract A116, Rue, Accomack Co, VA. Edward Hickman's children were named in the division of his land in settling his estate. The northern 56 acres was divided into 3 portions, as was the southern 50 acre strip. Son Richard received 17 1/2 acres of the 56 acres, son George received 18 1/2 acres of the 56 acres, and Stephen & Robert Hickman jointly received 20 acres of the 56 acres and it is assumed they were the sons of a dec'd child who had died before Edward. The 56 acres that were divided into these 3 tracts eventually became owned by Zepporah Ann Hickman Morten, seemingly the orphan daughter of Richard Hickman and were sold by her and her husband Thomas Morten of Somersette County, New Jersey, to James Rew of Accomack County in 1830 (Acc Deeds 1828-1830, p. 446). Henry Hickman received 15 acres of the southern 50 acre tract and the deed names his wife Scissey Hickman. This was probably Lissa Bayly that Henry is recorded as marrying in 1789. Thomas Hickman received 16 acres of the southern 50 acre tract and Dennis Hickman received the remaining acres of the southern 50 acre tract although his deed is not included with the 5 recorded in the division of 1798. Dennis & wife Bridget signed the other deeds and the next year (1799) they made a deed selling his brother Thomas Hickman's 18 1/2 acres for 55 pounds "The whole that fell to him by the death of his father" (Acc District Court Wills & Deeds, 1789-1799, p. 445). In 1806 Dennis and Bridget signed another deed selling Thomas (of Edward) the 3 acres of land that was Dennis' share of his late brother Henry Hickman's land.3 |
Death* | before 1810 | He died before 1810 at Accomack Co, VA. Dennis must have died before 1810, as Bridget Hickman is shown as a head of a census household that year, with 1M0-10. Dennis left no will and the settlement of his estate has not been found.2 |
