Richard Fuller Hall Jr. passed away at Weatherlea, his home on Onancock Creek, Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011. He was 86 years old. The son of Richard Fuller Hall and Jennie Fletcher Edmonds, Mr. Hall was born on July 19, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was educated in Brooklyn public schools, Accomac School, Fishburne Academy and the University of Virginia. He enrolled in the U.S. Navy's V-12 program at the University and attended Midshipman's School at Northwestern University. After receiving his commission as ensign, he served on LST 503 until the conclusion of World War II. He returned to Charlottesville to finish his undergraduate program and graduated with a degree in commerce in 1947, receiving his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1950. His interest in sports, especially college football, grew from his participation on the Virginia football team as an undergraduate. Mr. Hall demonstrated his allegiance to the University of Virginia throughout the years with his dedicated support of the School of Law and the McIntire School of Commerce. Mr. Hall began his legal career in California with the IRS office in San Francisco, later returning to Accomac, where he established a practice of more than 50 years. In addition to his law practice, Mr. Hall was engaged in real estate including the acquisition of Smith and Myrtle Islands in Northampton County, which were later purchased by The Nature Conservancy. He also developed and managed Four Corner Plaza in Onley. With other Eastern Shore business leaders, Mr. Hall founded Shore Savings and Loan in 1961. Under his leadership as chairman of the board, Shore Savings and Loan later became Shore Bank and was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange. His interests included local education. Mr. Hall was involved in the founding and development of Broadwater Academy in Exmore, where he served as a longtime board member. Mr. Hall and his wife sponsored the building of the school's gymnasium, which was named the Hall Center in their honor. A lifelong member and former deacon of the Makemie Presbyterian Church in Accomac, he sponsored the relocation of the Francis Makemie statue from upper Accomack County to a more secure site in the Accomac churchyard. The statue honoring Makemie, founder of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, was restored in honor of his grandmother, Jennie Rodes Fletcher. Boating was one of Mr. Hall's greatest pleasures. He and his wife cruised on the Sand Dollar throughout the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic Coast, spending winters in Florida. Mr. Hall, known as "Dick" to his family and friends, will be remembered as having a sharp wit and a keen sense of humor. He was an animated storyteller. He relished childhood tales and could remember the punch lines of all the jokes in his repertoire. Mr. Hall is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Wilson Bradley Hall, his daughter, Elizabeth Bradley Hall Benson of Palm Beach, Fla., and son, Richard Fuller Hall III and wife, Cynthia Dahlke Hall, of Accomac. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Lea Ashley Shannon Wright of Washington and Erin Fletcher Hall of Charlottesville. A private burial will be held at Edgehill Cemetery in Accomac, followed by a memorial service at Makemie Presbyterian Church in Accomac at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
