Spencer McMath 'Mc' Rogers
M, b. 29 July 1922, d. 14 May 2014
Birth* | 29 July 1922 | Spencer McMath 'Mc' Rogers was born on 29 July 1922. |
Marriage* | circa 1945 | He married Martha Scott circa 1945.2 |
Death* | 14 May 2014 | Spencer McMath 'Mc' Rogers died on 14 May 2014 at age 91. ROGERS, Mr. Spencer McMath "Mc," 91, husband of the late Martha Scott Rogers, and a lifelong resident of his cherished Onancock, Va., commenced his inseparable union with his much beloved wife and his God, Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Born July 29, 1922, he was the only child of the late Spencer Finney Rogers and Helen LeCato McMath Rogers. After graduation from Onancock High School in 1939, Mc was graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, followed by graduate studies in structural design. His studies at Virginia Tech were briefly interrupted, as Mc served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was a civil engineer and surveyor. In 1970, he began working with the Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC), eventually retiring as their chief engineer. Mc's line of work kept him out-of-doors, something he greatly treasured and enjoyed. On July 16, 1948, Mc was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in Chesapeake Masonic Lodge #158, A.F. & A.M., and thus began a long-time commitment and dedication to Freemasonry. Among other ways, he served this Lodge as treasurer and Worshipful Master in 1953. In 1981, Mc held the highest office in the Freemason fraternity in the state, Grand Master of Masons, Grand Lodge of Virginia, A.F. & A.M. For that year, he coined the slogan, "We'll have FUN in eighty-ONE!" Other highlights and memberships of his Freemason involvements include, Jewel Royal Arch Chapter #49, past District Deputy Grand High Priest, past High Priest, past treasurer; Malta Commandery 24, Past Commander; Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, 32nd Degree Knight Commander Court; and Khedive Temple in Norfolk. Mc was extremely active in his community, including a lifelong dedicated membership in the Market Street United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities throughout the years. One article, written about Mc and published in the Eastern Shore News, ended with a quote by him, "When the wind doesn't blow, I am fishing." He did love and enjoy that time on his boat, "Jingle Bells," and perpetually trying to catch "the big one." Mc was affectionately accused of "fishing for a living, and surveying as a hobby." Mc is survived by two children, Spencer McMath "Penny" Rogers Jr. and wife, Carol, of Wilmington, N.C. and Temple Rogers Richardson and husband, Rick, of Richmond, Va; three grandchildren, Morgan McMath Rogers, Shawn Thomas Richardson and wife, Heather, and Sara Temple Pierce and husband, Zechariah; three great-grandchildren, Spencer James Richardson, Keelin Noelle Pierce and Henry Graydon Pierce; two sisters-in-law, Harriet Scott Brockenbrough of Mechanicsville, Va. and Jean Tankard Scott of Onancock; and five nephews. In addition to his loving wife of almost 68 years, and his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Benjamin Willard Brockenbrough Jr. and James "Holland" Scott Jr. A memorial service will be conducted from the Market Street United Methodist Church, on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 4 p.m., with the Reverends Robert M. Chapman II and G. Wayne Parsley officiating. Private interment with Masonic Rites will be held at the Onancock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to (Continued...) ROGERS (Continued), the Market Street United Methodist Church, 75 Market St., Onancock, Va. 23417. Memory tributes may be shared with the family at www.williamsfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements by the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home. |

Anecdote* | circa 1900 | In her memiors, written when she was age 89, his granddaughter Emily, wrote "My grandfather was William Henry (Harry) Walters, born in 1865, the year the Civil War ended. He was born in New Church, Virginia, and he and his sister were orphaned at a very early age, and were taken in and raised by relatives. Some family members lived in Horntown, Virginia. His father was a miller, and lost his life at the age of 26 when he was struck down by a large heavy sack of grain that fell on him, breaking his neck. His mother, with her two little ones, remarried five or so years later. Her new husband was a doctor, Dr. Dix, who lived in Atlantic,Virginia, a very few miles from Horntown and New Church. My grandfather, for some reason unknown to me, did not like his step-father and ran away from home, walking the miles between Atlantic and Horntown to the house of his grandmother; she took him in and the family allowed him to live with her. His mother Emily Ellen Coulbourne Walters Dix (for whom I was named) died in childbirth early in her second marriage, giving birth to twin girls who also died. Harry and his little sister, Nellie, were orphaned. While they were still very young children, their grandmother died, and they were then sent to live with an aunt and her family in Pocomoke. Here they went to school and lived until old enough to go off on their own. After his schooling, my grandfather Walters first took a job on the steamer that plied the Eastern Shore waters of the Chesapeake Bay, sailing to and from Baltimore. This steamer carried both passengers and freight, and was most important to the economic, cultural and social life of the communities on its route. What his job was, I do not know, but this naive country boy soon learned that Baltimore and city life were not for him. Returning to Pocomoke, he opened a skating rink and bicycle shop and must have done well, because his future father-in-law (Edward McDermott Ross, 1860-1932) consented to his marrying his daughter, Nan Merrill (dau of Isaac Harrison Merrill and Annie Burley Primrose) and offered to finance Harry's schooling to become a dentist, after the marriage. He went back to Baltimore, but this time to go to college at the University of Maryland. He got his degree in dentistry, and as Pocomoke needed a dentist, he opened his office downtown. For many years he was the only dentist in town.He was perfect in the job, compassionate, skillful, meticulous, intelligent and inventive."3 |
