Jeffrey Minshall Sr.1
M, b. between 1621 and 1625, d. 8 April 1675
Birth* | between 1621 and 1625 | Jeffrey was born between 1621 and 1625 at Cheshire, England. He deposed on 9 Apr 1655 that he was aged 34 or thereabouts and on 28 Jun 1655 that he was aged 30..2,3 |
Anecdote* | | In the 2nd Edition of the Boston Family of Maryland, by Matthew Wise, p. 420 (Minshall Family) the author explains that for several decades, an English origin of Jeffrey Minshall has been widely accepted. This origin was the result of efforts by the late Col. John D. Long of Baltimore, a descendant of John Long (and thus of Jeffrey Minshall), who about 1933 engaged a British genealogist to research the Minshall family in England. The outcome was the discovery of a baptismal record of a Jeffrey Mynshull, 26 Mar 1620, in Wistaston Parish, Cheshire: "Geffery, the sone of Richard Mynshull was baptized ye sixe and twentie daye of Marche, Anno domini one thousand sixe and twentie." Since his birth year corresponded to an (34) given by Jeffrey Minshall in Virginia in 1655, Col. Long, and everyone else who has considered the matter, concluded that the immigrant Jeffrey Minshall and the Jeffrey Mynshull of the baptismal record were one and the same. The Wistaston Jeffrey was a son of Richard Mynshull and his wife, Ellen Goldsmith, and for the original edition of the present compilation and extensive lineage was subsequently worked out for the Mynshulls back to Anglo-Saxon times, and through allied families back to King Henry I of England. Not long before his death in the mid-1960s Col. Long, evidently in some doubt about the validity of the baptismal record, wrote to the College of Arms in London, whose genealogists examined the Bishops' Transcripts of the Wistaston Parish record. The result was found in a recent examination of Col. Long's papers, which he had bequeathed to the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis: Jeffrey, son of Richard Mynshull, was buried 16 Jun 1624, at the age of four. Since the pedigree that appeared in the first edition is therefore invalid, it has been removed (from this 2nd Edition), and the origin of the immigrant Jeffrey Minshall remains a mystery. He is probably a member of the Cheshire family, for Jeffrey and Randall were common names, and families of Minshall in other parts of England trace their origins to the Cheshire family.3 |

Court - named in ord* | 28 January 1661/62 | He was named in a court order on 28 January 1661/62 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that the Northampton Court (which then covered both present day counties of Northampton and Accomack) ordered William Coulbourne, Jeffrey Minshall, John Marcum and others of Hungars Parish to make present payment of what shall appear by the Church wardens to be due to be paid by them from the year 1654 in payment of the dues to the Minister and other parish dues belonging to the Church.8 |
Biography* | | According to Torrence, Jeffrey Minshall (d. 1675), of Northampton Co, VA, and Somerset Co, MD, no doubt derived descent from the Minshull, or Minshall, family of Cheshire and Devonshire, England, though as yet the connection has not been worked out and proved. The Visitation of Devonshire, 1620 (Harlein Soc. Pubs., VI, p. 184) gives a Minshull pedigree in which the names "Jefferie" and "Geoffrey" and "Randall" appear. The first edition of "The Boston Family of Maryland" by Matthew M. Wise, indicated that Jeffery was the son of a Richard Minshall and was baptised at Wistaston, County Chester, England, 26 Mar 1621. However, in Wise's second edition, he indicated that was a different Jeffery Minshall and that the pedigree of this Jeffery Minshall is still in question. He came to Virginia before 1645, when he was mentioned in a Northampton Co court record, and by 17 Sep 1666, with his wife and five children, had immigrated to Maryland where, on that date, he was assigned 400 acres called "Adventure," lying at the head of Marumsco Creek in Somerset Co. "Jeffry Mentiale" (Jeffery Minshall, Sr.) entered rights for land in Somerset Co, MD, 12 Apr 1666, viz: Jeffrey and Frances (evidently himself and his wife), Mary, Anne and Jane, his daughters; Jeffrey and Randall, his sons; and Wm. Collett, his servant. Jeffry Mentiale patented (on these rights) 400 acres of land at the head of Morummsco Branch. |
