Lyliston & Nancy his wife 1/3 part to hold as heir own Slaves; to Patsy Andrews 1/3 part and to Samuel Cox 1/3 part. Patsy Andrews & Samuel Cox are underage and their guardian Rich'd Nottingham was appointed by the Court to defend the suit. On 21 Oct 1809 the Court ordered the Sheriff to summon Patsey Andrews and Samuel Cox to appear in court the second Monday in November next to answer the Bill in Chancery. A final decree was dated 10 April 1810. (NOTE: This states the widow Susannah was the mother of Patsy Andrews, which is not consistent with the earlier Chancery case naming only Samuel Cox the younger has a brother of the half blood and the fact that Patsy Cox married Major Andrews in 1804 meaning she had to be Samuel Cox's daughter by his first wife, not Susannah who he married in 1798.)3 |

Deposition named in* | 18 August 1681 | Dorothy Conder was named in a deposition on 18 August 1681 at Accomack Co, VA. Upon the information of William Silverthrone, Dorothy Arew, wife of John Arew, was suspected of sodomy and was brought to court by Lt. Col. John West, Maj. Edmd. Bowman and Capt. Richard Hill. After hearing all the evidence, the court left the matter to a jury who found her to be not guilty. The court confirmed the verdict, ordering that the case be dismissed and that Dorothy be acquitted. Court charges were to be "equally born betwixt them." Dposition of Mary Ponton aged about 22 years: When Mary's Godfather and Godmother were gone from home, Dority Conder sent me for some eggs. When Mary could not find any, Dority sent her to another place. She still could not find any, and "as I came back again, I see the dog upon her stooping and her clothes were up, but what the dog did to her, I cannot tell. When she see me coming, she thrust the dog from her." Signed and sworn in open court 18 August 1681, by Mary (B) Bunton. Deposition of Mary Hill aged about 55 years: Dorothy, the wife of John Arew, "being very sick and like to die, had a great desire to see -me- and could not, as supposed, depart this world before she saw me." Xopher Thompson was sent to Gargaphia for Mary, who brought Mr. Parke, the minister of the parish with her. Parke came and "admonished her and she fell a hugging the said Mr. Parke, offering to kiss him." He gave her "many Godly admonitions" and asked her to say the Lord's Prayer; she tried, but could not say it. When Mr. Parke walked some distance away, Dorothy told Mary Hill that "what Mary Atkinson had declared was truth, and -I- made answer, 'Why then did you make me beat a poor motherless child wrongfully?'" Mary Hill went on to say that Dorothy "seemed mad, being forced to be bound and manacled with irons by reason she tore her clothes and offered violence both to herself and others." Signed and sworn in open court 18 August 1681, Mary Hill. Deposition of Mary Ayres aged about 35 years: Mary was at the house of John Arew during the sickness of his wife Dorothy, who asked the women then present to carry her "to the chimney and hold her fast and not to look up for fear the devil should come for his." Afterwards while they were laying her down, it thundered and Dorothy "said the Devil called for her." She wanted the women "to sit down by her and told us that, 'as you are all women and mothers of children, that you'd be private in what I shall say, for what Mary Atkinson did formerly say concerning the dog was most certainly true.' Then the said Dorothy said, 'Let me go out of the bed to the dunghill and send for all the neighbor's dogs that they may tear me to pieces.'" Dorothy went on to say something about puppies; Mary did not remember what it was, but quoted Dorothy as saying, "Be not afraid of me, for I shall not die now, for seven years shall I reign upon earth and then have a greater shame and conflict to go through than this." Signed and sworn in open court on 18 August 1681, by Mary Ayres.1 |

Beverley (of Southy) Rew1

Will - GrFath's* | 26 January 1763 | Beverley was named in his grandfather's will on 26 January 1763 at Accomack Co, VA. At probate of the estate of Wonney Rew, wife Comfort, the citation against Beverly Rew, heir-at-law to the testator, returned not to be found. Whitelaw states that it is quite possible that the name Beverley was in error for Southey Rew; he had been one of the Accomack justices and also served a term as sheriff, but shortly before the middle of the century he disappeared from the Shore. He went to North Carolina, where he became a substantial planter, and a son Solomon became clerk of New Burn County. (NOTE: Evidently Wonney's son Southey had died and his oldest son Beverley Rew became the heir-at-law.)4 |
