Birth* | 18 December 1832 | Michael W. Young II was born on 18 December 1832 at Philadelphia, PA.2 |
Biography* | | Beverly Walker reports that she has family letters indicating that Caleb Massey and wife Sally came to Philadelphia from time to time. In the early 1830s Leah Massey Young and her husband Michael Young came to Philadelphia. Leah's brother John Massey was also living here and working as a tobacconist. Michael W. Young was born Dec. 18, 1832. Michael Young Sr. died sometime before 1834. No death record has been found for him, however, in Philadelphia or on the Eastern Shore. She searched Philadelphia records for a while and found nothing relevant. By 1836 Leah Massey Young married again to a William Williams with whom she had four children. She died on Jan 5 1851 leaving her son Michael W. Young Jr. to care for his younger siblings. William Williams had died a year or so earlier.2 |
Marriage* | 18 December 1853 | He married Maria Ricketts Hickman, daughter of Isaac (of Robt) Hickman and Margaret H. Dix, on 18 December 1853 at Gloria Dei Church, Philadelphia, PA. Michael was a cooper by trade but apparently sold the property he inherited from his grandfather, Jonathan Young, in Accomack and returned to Philadelphia with Maria. Michael Young and Maria Hickman were married at Gloria Dei Church in 1853. His family was living on Norfolk St., about a half a block from the church in an area that was known for its Virginian inhabitants.2 |
Land sold* | 30 July 1856 | Michael W. Young II sold land on 30 July 1856 at Philadelphia, PA. A Michael W. Young and wife Maria R. of the City of Philadelphia sold his father Jonathan Young 30 acres to Samuel Ashby for $600.3 |
Census head* | 1870 | Michael was listed as a head of household in the census of 1870 at Ward 2, District 4, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, PA. HH#135 was headed by Mich. W. Young, a 36 year old Oak Cooper. Listed with him were Maria Young, age 31; Virginia Young, age 14; Chas Young, age 12; Mary Young, age 10; Clara Young, age 8; Ida Young, age 5 and Wm. S. Williams, a 34 year of Oak Cooper.4 |
Death* | 18 March 1912 | He died on 18 March 1912 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, PA, at age 79. Michael W. Young was the son of Michael (1808-abt. 1834) and Leah Massey (1812-1/5/1851)(#133568268) Young, daughter of Caleb and Sarah Massey of VA. Leah Massey Young married, second, to William Williams about 1835 in Philadelphia. William Williams died in 1849. The twice widow Leah Massey Young Williams continued to raise her family until she died two years later in 1851. See Leah Williams and her large family in the 1850 Philadelphia PA census. The transcription is poor so look at the actual page to recognize the handwriting. Michael was the husband of Maria Rickets Hickman Young (#68078703), (1836-10/30/1905), daughter of Isaac and Margaret Dix Hickman. He was the half-brother of William Samuel Williams (1836-1886)(#133570647) and Hester Williams, b. 1842, and others. Michael and Maria had numerous children and was usually listed as a Cooper, by trade, along with his brother William Samuel Williams. Michael bought two lots in Mount Peace, D-332 and D-333. There are 13 persons buried in D-332 and one person buried in D-333. His wife Maria (#68078703), brother William Samuel, five of his children including (#68078760, 68078778, 68078807, and 68078739), and he, himself, are buried in these lots. Not everyone, including himself got to be inscribed on the monument stone he placed for his wife and children.2,5 |

John Michael executed a trust deed to Michael Milburn, the son of his sister Anne; John was to retain a life interest and then it was to go to Milburn, but if the latter died it was then to go to George Abbott, a son of another sister Elizabeth. The 1772 will of Susanna Michael, widow of Simon, revealed that John, Anne and Elizabeth were her children. Nothing more was found on record about Michael Milburn, but a survey in 1800 indicated that 194 acres here were then owned by Joakim Milburn, and in 1818 another survey gave Elijah Hinman as the owner, he having married a Nancy Milburn.1 |
