The 1900 census shows the family in Atlantic District and from the names of neighbors, they were living near Temperanceville. Anecdote* | 23 June 1900 | The 1900 Federal Census for the small village of Poulson, in Cat Tail Neck, Metompkin District, Accomack Co, VA was taken on 23 June 1900. HH#463 was headed by Annie Wessells (1873-1917), a 28 year old widow. Listed with her were B.G. Wessells, a 7 year old son; Estelle Wessells, a 4 year old daughter; Miranda Wessells, age 1; and Elizabeth Trader, a 63 year old widowed mother. Her last child, Spurgeon Wessells was born 19 Dec 1902. Her first husband, John Edwards Wessells, drowned 31 Oct 1894. He was the father of her first two children, Eula Mae Wessells (1890-1968) and Beauregard Wessells (1892-1941). A second marriage to a Wessells was not found and the father of her last 4 children: Estelle, Miranda, Mae & Spurgeon is unproven. However, living next door to Annie in HH#462 was Spurgeon Lee Chase (1876-1947), listed with his parents, a 23 year old single oysterman. On 31 Dec 1902, 11 days after Annie's son Spurgeon Wessells was born, Spurgeon Chase married Nora M. Byrd and on 1 May 1904 they had a son Spurgeon Chase Jr. The given name Spurgeon is quite rare, being only two others in the MilesFiles of over 113,000 names (as of March 2022). Therefore, without any DNA tests to rely on, it is assumed that Spurgeon Lee Chase is the father of the last 4 of Annie Wessells' children.4 |
